Chinese researchers have unveiled a groundbreaking AI-powered agricultural innovation aimed at significantly accelerating the grape-growing process and reducing the time required to develop new varieties. The scientific team achieved an 85% prediction accuracy in identifying promising grape traits, quadrupling breeding efficiency compared to traditional methods. This comes according to a report by CGTN, a media partner of the TV BRICS network.

This innovation represents a significant step in AI-driven agriculture, enabling farmers to design and develop new grape varieties faster and more accurately. This breakthrough is expected to open new horizons in cultivating other crops, especially perennial crops, contributing to enhanced agricultural production and elevated efficiency.

The project relies on years of scientific research, including the first complete grape genome map released in 2023, alongside the Grapepan v1.0 genome, which provides new genetic data that contributes to improving breeding processes. By integrating machine learning techniques, the team successfully developed predictive models capable of analyzing the genetic potential of plants at early growth stages. This allows farmers to filter out less promising seedlings from the start, saving effort and resources while increasing the effectiveness of agricultural investments.

These efforts began in 2015, with researchers analyzing over 400 representative grape varieties and examining 29 traits, including berry size, bunch structure, and skin color. These studies resulted in precise genetic maps and detailed traits that form the basis of the AI-based predictive models. These maps allow farmers and breeders to select plants with the highest potential and develop them faster and at a lower cost, contributing to improved breeding strategies.

By applying artificial intelligence in this manner, research and development operations are accelerated and resources are conserved, boosting farm productivity and reducing environmental impact. This revolution in AI agriculture may be the first step toward applying these techniques on a broader scale in breeding other perennial crops, opening the door to new agricultural enhancements that bolster global food security.
