This update means that cognitive context and cumulative preferences acquired by the model over months of daily conversations will automatically transfer to Cowork sessions and vice versa, completely eliminating the need to repeatedly explain project requirements and work preferences when switching between tools.
The company said in its official statement: “Cowork now has a connected smart memory, which is the same memory used in chat conversations; when the tool performs a complex task in the cloud, everything Claude remembers from your previous conversations is present and available for direct use, and the same applies when returning to chat.”
How real-time data updates work
Anthropic provided practical examples illustrating the impact of this integration; when you ask Cowork to write a periodic report for your manager at work, the model is already aware of this manager’s identity and preferred style for drafting reports based on previous conversations. Permanently prohibited data and availability details
Anthropic confirmed that certain categories of data remain permanently and absolutely prohibited from being stored in memory regardless of user desire or account settings; these include social security numbers, government ID and passport numbers, criminal records, bank account and card numbers, and immigration and visa statuses.
The unified memory feature is available by default for all Free, Pro, and Max subscribers across web, desktop, and mobile apps, while the sensitive topic option remains disabled and requires manual activation.
