Introduction: Netflix enters the physical world

For years, Netflix has been a pioneer in streaming, bringing movies and television shows directly to our living rooms. Now, the streaming giant is taking a bold step in the opposite direction, stepping out of the screen and into the physical world with the opening of the first “Netflix House.”

Marian Lee, the company’s chief marketing officer, says: “This is the first permanent physical manifestation of Netflix for our fans. They have been inviting us into their homes for years and years.”

What is “Netflix House”?

The first Netflix House is not a house in the literal sense. It is a former Lord & Taylor store at the King of Prussia Mall outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The space has been transformed into an entertainment destination where fans can immerse themselves in the worlds of their favorite shows.

Inside, visitors can enjoy a mini-golf course, restaurants, a cinema theater, and plenty of spots specifically designed for taking selfies. You can sit on a velvet red throne in Bridgerton style or relax on an Afghan-covered couch in a Stranger Things living room.

Focus on immersive experiences

Marian Lee emphasizes that Netflix House focuses on immersive experiences, not just movie theaters. The first location features a spooky multimedia experience called “Eve of the Outcasts” based on the hit show Wednesday.

The second location, scheduled to open in Dallas, Texas, in December, won’t even contain a screen. Instead, it will feature a virtual immersive Squid Game experience for those craving the thrill of reenacting dramatic challenges (without the lethal consequences).

The strategy behind the move

This move into the physical world is a natural evolution of Netflix’s marketing efforts. Paul Dergarabedian, senior market analyst at research firm Comscore, says: “What they are trying to do is blur the lines between their content, your home experience, your small screen experience, and a fully interactive, immersive, tangible, and personal experience.”

Additionally, this is a way for fans to essentially market the shows to each other through social media. Every selfie taken and shared is free advertising for Netflix and its content.

Competition with entertainment giants

Netflix houses provide something that other streaming services already possess: a connection to a physical space where fans can interact with favorite characters and shows. Disney, with its theme parks, is also the parent company of Hulu. And Universal Studios is a sister company to NBC’s Peacock.

By creating its own destinations, Netflix aims to deepen its relationship with subscribers and compete with these established entertainment brands on an experiential level.

Business model and data collection

This transition to the physical world follows dozens of pop-up experiences in 350 cities worldwide. Lee says: “That gave us a lot of information about what fans love in Korea versus fans in Madrid. It gives us a lot of local insights.”

Alongside valuable data, Netflix houses introduce a new revenue stream. Admission to explore is free, but the company aims to monetize through upgrades. Dergarabedian adds: “They want to sell you these multimedia experiences, immersive virtual reality games, mini-golf, and the like.”

Future locations and global expansion

With locations opening in Philadelphia and Dallas, Netflix is currently working on a third location in Las Vegas. The long-term vision is ambitious. Lee says: “I would love for there to be one in every major city around the world.”

Netflix House represents a new chapter in the company’s story, as it seeks to maintain its dominance in an ever-changing entertainment landscape by bringing its fictional worlds to life.
