The tournament features 51 diverse competitions, including traditional sports like soccer and table tennis, alongside events simulating complex industrial tasks such as electric vehicle charging, restaurant service, and precision wiring and connector assembly.
This development reflects an incredible leap in engineering performance, as Tiangong Ultra’s winning time in the 100-meter race at the 2025 games was 21.50 seconds, meaning the time was cut in half in just one year.

The tournament kicked off the same week Beijing hosted the 2026 World Robot Conference, amid a notable escalation in geopolitical and trade tensions between Washington and Beijing over advanced robotics technology. The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) announced last month a ban on imports of new foreign humanoid robots under the pretext of national security, while the Pentagon added Unitree, one of China’s most prominent robotics manufacturers, to its list of companies linked to the Chinese military. Despite this, Unitree’s shares surged more than fivefold on their first day of trading on the Shanghai Stock Exchange.
Despite this exciting sports exhibition, industry experts emphasized that humanoid robots remain confined to experimental scopes and demonstrations of mechanical power. Yu Zhao, CEO of Lumos Robotics, stated: “A robot’s true value is only revealed when it is capable of working productively in end-use operational environments; simply running and jumping does not necessarily raise the efficiency of production chains.”
