Alibaba and Tencent, China's largest technology giants, spent approximately $18 billion on capital expenditures during the second quarter of 2026 amid an intense arms race to build artificial intelligence infrastructure. Despite acute financial pressure and declining net profits, both companies are betting that smart computing is the definitive engine of future growth.

The record spending by Chinese companies reflects an intense desire to secure digital sovereignty and cloud computing despite short-term declines in quarterly profits.

Record capital expenditure and declining profit margins

China’s two largest publicly listed technology companies, Alibaba and Tencent, recorded a combined capital expenditure of 120 billion Chinese yuan (equivalent to roughly $18 billion) during the second quarter of 2026, amid an unprecedented intensification of the tech arms race to build data centers, purchase supercomputing infrastructure, and develop artificial intelligence models.

Alibaba’s official financial report for the quarter ending June 30 showed that its capital expenditures reached 67.68 billion yuan (approximately $9.97 billion), marking a massive 75% jump compared to the same period last year. This heavy financial influx eroded cash flows and caused the company’s net profit to plunge by 76% year-on-year to reach just 10.54 billion yuan.

Similarly, Tencent announced quarterly capital expenditures of 52.8 billion yuan, far exceeding financial analysts’ average expectations of 32.1 billion yuan and representing a 65% increase over the previous quarter. Although Tencent’s total revenue grew by 11% to reach 204.8 billion yuan, its net profit rose by only 0.7% to 56 billion yuan, falling short of expectations. Furthermore, free cash flow turned negative with a deficit of 13.8 billion yuan, and the net cash balance on the company’s balance sheet dropped from 146.9 billion yuan at the end of March to 58.2 billion yuan by the end of June.

Long-term technological arms race through 2030

Commenting on the earnings results, Eddie Wu, CEO of Alibaba Group, stressed during a financial results earnings call that the industry-wide shortage in global AI computing capabilities is unlikely to ease or recede before 2030. He projected that the company will be able to recover its infrastructure investment costs via Alibaba Cloud services within a period ranging from two and a half to three years, emphasizing that artificial intelligence has become “the company’s most certain growth engine.”

For his part, Martin Lau, president of Tencent, stated that the company feels very comfortable with these heavy investments due to their ability to generate rapid returns once computing resources are leased to customers. Meanwhile, CEO Liu Chiping described this spending as a “one-off massive investment” to fund model training, inference, and smart cloud services, warning investors against assuming this level of record capital expenditure will continue every year.

In the same context, estimates indicate that private company ByteDance is spending at levels matching or exceeding these figures. Last May, Bloomberg revealed internal discussions at ByteDance to raise its capital expenditure budget for 2026 to around $70 billion.

Financial return indicators and smart cloud growth

These bold investment expenditures have begun to bear initial fruit in revenue generation. Alibaba’s cloud computing unit revenue rose 38% year-on-year, while AI-related products achieved growth exceeding 100% for several consecutive quarters. Additionally, Tencent’s AI capabilities and algorithms helped drive digital advertising revenue growth by 22%.

Nevertheless, financial pressures remain evident across the entire sector. Industry estimates suggest that at least 80% of the two companies’ total capital expenditures were directed specifically toward artificial intelligence. In contrast, quarterly spending by smaller competitors, such as Baidu, does not cross the 6 to 8 billion yuan barrier, which is roughly one-tenth of the spending by either giant.

Wall Street comparison and regional competitive pressures

Global investment bank Goldman Sachs compared Tencent’s current investment phase to the intensive spending cycle experienced by American company Meta two quarters ago, describing it as “enduring short-term financial pain in order to secure a fortified long-term market leadership position.” This scenario reflects the determination of China’s tech giants to continue fierce competition and ensure infrastructure independence, even if it costs them a large portion of their profits and cash flow in the foreseeable future.
