The system, unveiled by the Department during the Arabian Travel Market 2025, aims to support guest identity verification, elevate the visitor experience, streamline procedures, and expedite check-in at hotel establishments. The Department adopted the facial recognition system following the signing of a cooperation agreement with the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security.

System objectives and benefits for the tourism sector

His Excellency Saleh Mohamed Al Geziry, Director General of Tourism at the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, stated: “The adoption of the facial recognition system represents an important step in our efforts to solidify Abu Dhabi’s leadership in smart tourism. This initiative reflects our commitment to leveraging innovation to elevate guest experiences while maintaining the highest safety and security standards for them and hotel staff alike. Through cooperation with the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security, our partners in the hotel sector, and relevant government entities, we are delivering a more flexible, exceptional, and secure tourism experience for our visitors.”

This project is the first government initiative in the emirate of Abu Dhabi to implement facial recognition technology in partnership with the hotel sector, representing a proactive approach to establishing top hospitality and security standards in hotel establishments.

Phases of implementing the system in hospitality establishments

The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi has adopted the system in its pilot phase across a number of the emirate’s hotels, with the first phase of full implementation scheduled to begin later in five-star hotels in the city of Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and Al Dhafra region, while the second phase will include four-star hotels, expanding gradually to cover all hotel classification categories across the emirate.

The Department is working with hotels in the emirate to ensure the smooth and effective implementation of the facial recognition system by organizing workshops and direct meetings, providing detailed explanations about the system, and offering necessary technical support and training. This technology’s role is not limited to improving security levels; it also contributes to expediting check-in and check-out procedures to enhance operational efficiency while providing guests with an exceptional experience powered by the latest smart solutions.

Technology used and how the system works

The facial recognition system relies on capturing and analyzing guests’ biometric data during check-in procedures, with the data obtained from the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security encrypted to the highest security levels, and then sent to a centralized database managed by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, in accordance with the country’s cybersecurity laws and data protection regulations.

This data is used exclusively to verify guest security and facilitate hotel operations, while strictly adhering to the highest legal and ethical standards.

Cooperation agreement with the Federal Identity Authority

The cooperation agreement between the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi and the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security covers several strategic areas that support digital transformation in the emirate’s tourism sector.
