Tesla has officially announced October 1 as the long-awaited unveiling date for the second generation of its Roadster electric supercar after a series of delays spanning nearly nine years. The new vehicle features the integration of cold gas thruster technologies developed in collaboration with SpaceX to achieve unprecedented rocket-like acceleration.

The new Roadster will represent a unique engineering feat that merges space rocket technology with electric supercars in a way that breaks conventional rules.

Tesla’s official announcement and countdown to launch

Tesla officially announced on Saturday that it will unveil the long-awaited second generation of its Roadster electric supercar on October 1. The announcement was made via a distinctive teaser image posted on the X platform accompanied by the phrase “Get ready for launch,” with the date “10.01” prominently displayed at the bottom of the ad.

This coincided with the temporary appearance of an official countdown clock on the dedicated Roadster page of Tesla’s website, marking the first major update to that page in nearly nine years and sparking widespread excitement among electric vehicle enthusiasts and investors worldwide.

Nine years of delays and pending technical promises

The teaser image shows the rear portion of a low, wide vehicle with four white gas emissions trailing from behind the car and a connected red light strip, providing a clear visual nod to the cold gas thrusters developed by SpaceX that CEO Elon Musk promised back in 2018. When brightening the image’s shadows, a hidden quote from the film “Back to the Future” appears: “Where we’re going, we don’t need roads.”

Tesla first showcased the vehicle prototype in November 2017, promising 0-to-60 mph acceleration in under two seconds, a top speed exceeding 250 mph, a starting price of $200,000, and deliveries in 2020, but the date has been delayed eight consecutive times.

New design and A71 pneumatic thruster engines

Expectations indicate that the car appearing in October will differ entirely from the initial concept shown in 2017. Musk has repeatedly stated that the production version will be completely different, and reports from The Information in August confirmed the complete abandonment of the old design in favor of new architecture.

The thruster system, known internally by the code name “A71,” occupies the rear seat space with approximately ten pneumatic thrusters and a high-pressure air tank. Demonstrations are expected to potentially include remote, driverless vehicle takeoff and temporary hovering above the ground, requiring the audience to stay hundreds of feet away to avoid high noise levels.

Safety challenges and public road versions

Tesla engineers have explained that the version equipped with the full rocket package will not be street-legal for public roads, and a standard commercial version is planned alongside it without the thruster package to suit everyday consumer use.

The company is working to balance hyper-performance and the instant torque generation of electric vehicles with the stringent safety requirements of traffic regulatory bodies, ensuring the car complies with highway driving standards without endangering pedestrians and drivers.

The fate of early reservations and celebrity cancellations

Despite the confirmed reveal date, buyers are still far from taking delivery of their vehicles. Musk stated at last year’s shareholder meeting that commercial production will not begin before 2027 or 2028. Early reservation holders who paid deposits of $50,000 for the base model or $250,000 for the Founders Series since 2017 are still awaiting their turn.

This multi-year delay prompted famous tech figures such as YouTuber Marques Brownlee and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman to cancel their reservations and reclaim their funds after losing hope of early delivery.

Manufacturing in Texas and the actual production timeline

Tesla removed old pricing details from its website, leaving open the question of whether the starting price will remain at $200,000 or increase during the October event.

Lars Moravy, Tesla’s VP of Vehicle Engineering, confirmed that the vehicle will be manufactured at Gigafactory Texas in Austin, describing the integration of the SpaceX thruster package as “one of the hardest and most complex engineering programs the company has ever undertaken,” making October 1 an exceptional date for testing Musk’s future promises.
