From transitioning apps to integrating advanced models, Tencent unveils a comprehensive strategy aimed at delivering AI experiences that exceed expectations.

Amid tremendous advancements in artificial intelligence, major corporations find themselves in a fierce race to deliver innovations that secure their leadership. Tencent, one of China’s largest internet and video game companies, has entered the competition strongly through a comprehensive restructuring of its AI departments. This step coincides with escalating competition from other tech giants such as Alibaba and Baidu, alongside the emergence of ambitious startups like DeepSeek.

Moving apps to the smart computing group

Recently, Tencent moved several AI applications—such as QQ Browser, the Sogou Pinyin input tool, and the educational assistant Ima—from its platform and content group to the cloud and smart industries group. This was not the first such move, having been preceded by a similar step when the Yuanbao chatbot was transferred from the technical engineering group to the same division. According to Chinese media reports, Tencent emphasizes that these adjustments fall within its new strategy to focus on AI services in vital areas such as cloud computing, big data analytics, and deep learning applications.

Market competition background

China’s artificial intelligence market is witnessing widespread competition among tech giants. Alibaba, owner of the prominent e-commerce platform, is likewise seeking to develop advanced AI ecosystems to serve its analytics and logistics operations. Meanwhile, search pioneer Baidu is investing heavily in autonomous driving technologies and language-based AI applications. In this heated climate, Tencent cannot afford to lag behind, especially given its massive capabilities in social media, gaming, and payment services via WeChat, which is used by over 1.3 billion people.

Strategic shift: pursuing the user experience

Analysts believe that Tencent is increasingly focusing on activating artificial intelligence across its products to improve the user experience. When DeepSeek introduced its R1 model into the WeChat search engine, some users got the chance to test new capabilities in automation and intelligent search. Interestingly, Tencent did not hesitate to integrate the DeepSeek-R1 model alongside its proprietary Hunyuan model, indicating its openness to expanding options for users rather than locking them into a single solution.

Real user experiences

Some users report that they tested DeepSeek via WeChat to get help writing reports or answering random questions. Although the results were not always perfect, the application was more stable than the original DeepSeek app, which suffered from frequent outages. Others note that they also turned to Yuanbao for their research work to leverage the same R1 model found in DeepSeek, but within a more stable platform.

Tencent’s future goals

Tencent is not content with merely integrating external models; it continues to develop its internal models, such as Hunyuan-T1, which it claims can rival the R1 model. The company seeks to provide solutions serving enterprises and businesses in customer management and technical support fields via WeChat Work. Tencent is expected to continue strengthening its cloud infrastructure in hopes of attracting more partners who require high-efficiency computing and massive data processing to run advanced AI models.

Tencent’s restructuring of its artificial intelligence departments demonstrates the company’s seriousness in maintaining its market share within an increasingly competitive landscape. While it works to integrate external AI models and develop internal ones, its main goal remains delivering the best possible user experience, whether in entertainment services or enterprise analytics. Despite significant challenges, Tencent appears poised to enter this race strongly, setting its sights on expanding innovation and revenue horizons simultaneously.
