Swedish defense company Saab has unveiled a full-scale prototype of a supersonic stealth combat drone designed to fly and engage in collaborative combat alongside Gripen E fighters, marking Sweden's official entry into the field of collaborative combat aircraft.

Saab’s new project represents a qualitative shift in European air doctrine toward integrating unmanned combat aircraft with manned fighters to decide air battles.

Advanced stealth design without a vertical tail

Swedish defense company Saab lifted the curtain on a full-scale prototype of a new combat drone featuring advanced stealth capabilities and supersonic speed during the commemorative air show at Malmen Air Base in Linköping on August 21, 2026. The aircraft carries the code designation “A3-001” and is designed to fly and engage in collaborative combat operations alongside “Gripen E” fighters under the company’s autonomous collaborative platform program, marking Sweden’s official entry into the growing field of collaborative combat drones.

The A3-001 relies on a tailless delta wing configuration with an integrated fuselage and cropped-edge wings, all engineered to minimize its radar cross-section. The aircraft’s internal weapons bay allows it to carry munitions and missiles without external protrusion, preserving stealth and low-observable characteristics. The absence of a vertical stabilizer is an additional design choice to reduce the radar cross-section, alongside a distinctive serrated engine nozzle around the exhaust, a technology also used in advanced F-35 fighters to manage and diffuse thermal and radar signatures from the rear.

Saab looks forward to assigning this drone vital missions that military leaders are hesitant to assign to manned platforms due to high risks, including electronic warfare, suppression of enemy air defenses, and precision strikes in heavily defended and dangerous airspace environments. Under this operational concept, a Gripen E pilot can direct multiple A3 drones simultaneously while remaining stationed outside the airspace most heavily defended and fortified by the enemy.

The aircraft benefits from advanced technologies for absorbing radar waves and diffusing electromagnetic emissions, allowing it to penetrate advanced enemy air defenses, execute tactical reconnaissance missions, gather real-time intelligence, and transmit it securely to the air command and control center.

Timeline for prototype development

The “A3-001” concept is supported by two technology prototypes bearing the names “A1” and “A2”, as Saab holds an official contract to develop and test them through 2030. Peter Nilsson, head of the advanced programs business unit at Saab, stated that the company aims to “fly unmanned prototypes featuring fighter characteristics before 2030” as part of ongoing joint work with the Swedish defense establishment.

Nilsson explained: “The Saab A3 autonomous system is our vision of what could follow in the mid-2030s if Sweden decides to build upon the outcomes of the work currently underway.” The Aviationist magazine reported that Saab is targeting the first test flight of the prototype within approximately 18 months, placing the first flight tests in late 2027 or early 2028.

This ambitious timeline highlights Sweden’s desire to strengthen its defense independence and develop sovereign air systems capable of operating in complete harmony with allied air forces, providing an advanced protection umbrella for regional airspace amid growing and complex geopolitical threats.

Strategic context of collaborative combat programs

The unveiling of this aircraft comes at a time when several major countries are racing to develop similar collaborative combat aircraft programs, including the advanced American platforms “YFQ-42A” and “YFQ-44A”. In late 2025, Saab and Airbus confirmed joint talks between them to cooperate on developing drone fighter technologies for both Eurofighter and Gripen fighters.

The broader Swedish defense program to support future fighters is financially backed by a 2.6 billion Swedish krona contract provided by the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration, primarily aiming to shape and secure Sweden’s air combat capabilities beyond 2040 and ensure air superiority in the face of evolving future threats.

This Swedish trend reflects a deep awareness of rapid transformations in the modern air warfare environment, where stealth drones emerge as a force multiplier for the combat capabilities of traditional fighters, providing superior operational flexibility while minimizing human risks to pilots on the front lines.
