Rivian has unveiled its new "Autonomy Plus" self-driving system and an AI-powered smart assistant, with plans to include lidar sensors and advanced cameras in the upcoming R2 model.

In a bold bid to outpace competitors ahead of a crucial vehicle launch that could determine the company’s fate, and amidst a frantic race to integrate artificial intelligence and advanced driver assistance systems, electric vehicle maker Rivian has unveiled a new technical arsenal. The announcements included a latest-generation hands-free driving system powered by improved highway maps, a custom in-house developed processor, a lidar sensor, and an intelligent voice assistant. These steps come as the company prepares to launch its midsize electric SUV, the R2, at a competitive price starting around $45,000.

Introduction: Rivian builds its technical home

At a tech event in Palo Alto on Thursday, Rivian detailed the significant progress made by its proprietary autonomous driving system compared to its second-generation system, which was released just a year ago. Rivian has been working on its own artificial intelligence technology for a few years, as said by founder and CEO RJ Scaringe. While the company learned hard lessons from its previous reliance on external suppliers and being tied to the same cost fluctuations as its competitors, Rivian’s strategic focus is now on cutting costs and keeping its technology entirely “under its own control,” giving it greater development flexibility.

“Autonomy Plus” system: a leap in coverage

With this update, the new Large Driving Model will feature a hands-free driving assistant covering an estimated 3.5 million miles of US roads with point-to-point service, up from the limited coverage of about 150,000 miles in the current system. This figure represents a qualitative leap and is also more than what competing current systems offer, such as General Motors’ Super Cruise and Ford’s BlueCruise. Rivian Autonomy Plus will launch next year, priced at a one-time fee of $2,500 or through a monthly subscription.

Technical specifications: new cameras and lidar

Unlike Tesla, which relies solely on cameras (vision-only), Rivian has decided to integrate lidar sensors into its new vehicles. Lidar is a technology that uses laser beams to map surroundings in precise 3D, providing an additional layer of safety especially in low-light conditions. In the R2 model, the system will integrate 11 65-megapixel cameras, 5 radar sensors, and a new lidar sensor, all powered by the third-generation Rivian Autonomy processor developed in-house.

Rivian smart assistant: natural communication

Rivian also unveiled its proprietary AI assistant, the Rivian Assistant, which will debut early next year. This assistant will not be just a traditional voice command system; rather, it will integrate third-party applications like Google Calendar and use advanced speech-to-text technology instead of canned responses. The assistant aims to create more natural ways to accomplish tasks such as providing destination recommendations, estimating arrival times, and even running vehicle diagnostics, making it feel more like an intelligent companion than a mere tool.

Future vision and legacy vehicle updates

Interestingly, Rivian is not abandoning its current customers. The company stated that the Rivian Smart Assistant and many software updates will also be available for existing first- and second-generation models (R1T and R1S), enhancing the value of its vehicles over time. Scaringe concluded by comparing the company’s efforts to “building a house,” where physical and software pieces are assembled to form an integrated vision for the future.

Frequently asked questions

Question: What is new and distinctive about Rivian’s autonomous driving system?

Question: Will the update be available for older vehicles?

Answer: Yes, the Rivian Smart Assistant and some software updates will be available for current models (Gen1 and Gen2), but new hardware features like lidar will be exclusive to new vehicles.

Question: When will the new R2 vehicle be launched?

Answer: The R2 is expected to arrive in markets in 2026 and will be the first vehicle to carry the complete new system straight from the factory.
