In a move to consolidate efforts in a niche market, Pronto.ai, led by Anthony Levandowski, has acquired its competitor SafeAI. The deal aims to combine talent and technology to accelerate the growth of autonomous trucks in construction and mining sites.

Introduction: Combining talent in a niche market

The intersection of engineers who know a thing or two about artificial intelligence, autonomous driving, and mining is a very small one. And Anthony Levandowski, CEO of Pronto.ai, wants as many of those people as possible. The acquisition helps him achieve that goal. The San Francisco-based startup, which has developed an autonomous driving system designed for haul trucks and other off-road vehicles used in construction and mining sites, has acquired its competitor SafeAI.

Deal details and objectives

Terms of the deal were not disclosed. However, Levandowski said the acquisition is a talent and technology deal. The bulk of the startup’s small 12-person engineering team and its intellectual property will transition to Pronto. A source familiar with the deal said the acquisition price for SafeAI was in the “millions.”

“In autonomous transportation systems, there are really two players—SafeAI and us,” Levandowski said in a recent interview. He added that SafeAI and Pronto took different approaches to the market. “We’ve been growing significantly and needed to add more people and resources to the team, so it made sense to buy them… to focus our efforts and accelerate our growth.”

Pronto, co-founded by Ognen Stojanovski in 2018, uses advanced sensors, cameras, and artificial intelligence to operate haul trucks autonomously. Pronto also utilizes the Pollen Mobile network, an open-source, peer-to-peer mobile data network launched by the startup in 2022 that allows it to exchange data anonymously and at high speeds without relying on traditional carriers.

Expanding capabilities and global reach

Pronto has kept its team relatively small at around 40 people. The acquisition of SafeAI will help Pronto serve more customers, including internationally. Last year, Pronto expanded its partnership with Heidelberg Materials North America, one of the world’s largest producers of building materials and cement. Pronto’s technology has been integrated into Komatsu haul trucks, which operate autonomously on-site. Earlier this year, Pronto announced an agreement with Heidelberg to deploy more than 100 autonomous trucks and expand its team in Brazil.

Scalable technology stack

The acquisition will also allow Pronto to cater to a variety of needs ranging from small quarries to large mines. Notably, the acquisition will allow Pronto to offer a scalable technology stack to customers. Pronto is known for its camera-only approach. SafeAI, founded in 2017 and having raised $38 million in a Series B funding round three years ago, uses multiple sensors, on-board cameras, radar, and lidar. Pronto plans to offer a multi-sensor approach in addition to using SafeAI’s safety framework, which has been certified to the ASIL D standard, the highest level of systems safety in the industry.

Conclusion: A strategic step toward dominance

Pronto’s acquisition of SafeAI represents a smart strategic move in a niche yet growing market. By combining two of the most skilled teams in the field, Pronto not only acquires rare engineering talent but also expands its technology portfolio to meet the needs of a broader range of customers. This acquisition puts Pronto in a strong position to lead the future of autonomy in the construction and mining sectors, industries poised to benefit from the efficiency and safety provided by autonomous vehicles.
