From Facebook to Llama 4, Meta is climbing at an astonishing pace in the world of generative technologies, putting billions of dollars on the line.

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has announced its intention to spend between $60 billion and $65 billion this year to bolster its artificial intelligence infrastructure. This move comes amid fierce competition among tech giants to develop more advanced AI models and establish giant data centers capable of handling the growing volume of operations. Mark Zuckerberg, Meta’s CEO, points out that this year will be “pivotal” for artificial intelligence, stressing that these massive investments represent Meta’s bet on the future of generative and analytical technologies.

Building a giant data center

As part of its ambitious plans, Meta intends to build a data center exceeding 2 gigawatts in capacity, which has been compared to a space large enough to cover a significant portion of Manhattan. This center will supply the company with what it needs to run AI models on a large scale, including training models for advanced tasks such as language understanding and computer vision. Reports indicate that Meta is one of Nvidia’s largest clients specializing in smart chips, as it plans to purchase more than 1.3 million graphics processing units to support its operations.

The importance of AI to Meta

Zuckerberg emphasizes that artificial intelligence will become a crucial element in Meta’s future, noting the possibility of integrating it into all its services such as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. The company aims to develop an intelligent assistant that works across all its platforms, capable of interacting with more than a billion users by 2025. This assistant will not be limited to text conversations, but may extend to complex tasks such as schedule management, event organization, and content recommendations.

Meta also announced its intention to launch the fourth version of the Llama model, under the name “Llama 4,” to be more advanced and flexible in understanding different contexts. Expectations indicate that “Llama 4” may target areas of technical troubleshooting and producing creative content with greater accuracy.

An infrastructure competition wave

Meta’s investments come at a time when other major companies have announced similar plans. For example, Microsoft intends to spend about $80 billion in its upcoming fiscal year to develop its data centers, while Amazon expects its capital expenditures to exceed $75 billion in 2025. Even President Donald Trump entered the investment fray, announcing a tripartite partnership between OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle under the name “Stargate,” which aims to pump $500 billion into AI infrastructure in the United States.

The competition is not limited to building centers, but extends to attracting engineering talent and specialists in deep learning. As Meta, Microsoft, Amazon, and others race to hire the best minds, salaries are rising and competition in the tech labor market is intensifying.

Meta and generative AI

Alongside traditional services, Meta pays great attention to generative artificial intelligence technologies that allow the automatic creation of text, images, and videos. Some analysts believe that Meta seeks to use these capabilities to invent new forms of social interaction, such as creating 3D personal avatars or interactive videos that take the user experience to a new level.

On the other hand, this trajectory raises questions about security and privacy. Experts expect generative AI technologies to collide with issues such as defamation or highly realistic deepfakes. Therefore, Meta may also be forced to invest in fake detection systems and malicious content processing to ensure that its digital space remains a safe environment for users.

With its major spending plans on artificial intelligence, Meta is outlining a strategic shift in the company’s structure and ambitions. Building a data center of this size and allocating billions of dollars to chips and the latest technologies demonstrates that the company is seeking to compete with other tech giants and perhaps surpass them in certain respects. However, success in this race requires effective management of risks and technical and ethical challenges. All eyes will remain on Meta to monitor whether it will succeed in achieving a real revolution in the world of artificial intelligence and making the most of its massive investments.
