A look at Hangzhou's rise as a new tech hub in China following the success of the DeepSeek chatbot.

From Alibaba to future robotics, Hangzhou is making its mark as a rising destination for innovation and technology in East Asia.

In recent weeks, the city of Hangzhou has emerged as one of the most important artificial intelligence centers in China, following the massive success of the DeepSeek chatbot. While everyone is accustomed to bestowing titles like “China’s Silicon Valley” on major cities such as Shenzhen, Beijing, or Shanghai, Hangzhou’s rise points to the emergence of a new star in the tech world, fueled by an abundance of human and financial capital and an unquenchable desire for innovation.

Rooted technical history

Hangzhou is famous for being the home of e-commerce giant Alibaba, alongside NetEase, which operates in gaming, music, and email. However, what is driving the city to the forefront now is a growing focus on artificial intelligence projects, drawing on local talent and a strong, diverse funding network.

The “DeepSeek” phenomenon

DeepSeek stole the spotlight as the newest chatbot relying on advanced language models, similar to what ChatGPT offers, but distinguished by lower operational costs and greater flexibility in responding to the Chinese language. Its success has sparked a new wave of interest from domestic and foreign investors, who have rushed to contact startups in Hangzhou in hopes of discovering promising investment opportunities in artificial intelligence.

The “Six Dragons”

Local media have dubbed Hangzhou’s most prominent tech companies the “Six Dragons,” including DeepSeek and two robotics companies capable of handling heavy-duty tasks such as sewage system inspection and search-and-rescue operations. Other standout firms include GameScience, which specializes in gaming; Money Core Technology, which develops design software; and BrainCo, which focuses on connecting computing capabilities to the human brain. This diverse group demonstrates the comprehensiveness of the city’s tech scene.

The power of local universities

Graduates of Zhejiang University, ranked among China’s top universities, play a pivotal role in the growth of Hangzhou’s tech sector. It has produced the founders of prominent companies such as Baidu, Pinduoduo, and Alibaba’s cloud computing division. The founder of DeepSeek himself is one of these alumni, reflecting the university’s importance in supplying high-level scientific talent.

A thriving funding environment

Hangzhou benefits from its geographical proximity to Shanghai, being just a thirty-minute high-speed train ride away. This allows for easy access to capital and major investments, alongside strong support from the Zhejiang provincial government, which has allocated hundreds of billions of yuan to support advanced technology projects, particularly in artificial intelligence.

Promising future and potential challenges

Despite this momentum, Hangzhou faces challenges related to fierce competition with other Chinese cities that still retain major advantages, whether in infrastructure or proximity to political power in Beijing. Nonetheless, experts believe Hangzhou’s rising status can be compared to Seattle, which started with two corporate giants but quickly attracted a wave of innovative startups.

The leap toward emerging technologies

Observers note that Hangzhou is not stopping at developing chatbots or e-commerce; it is also expanding into areas like specialized robotics, high-quality gaming, and brain-computer interfaces—all promising fields that could place the city at the forefront of technological development in the coming years.

Eleven and other scenarios

On the sidelines of the discussion about Hangzhou, some recall success and failure stories of famous global companies, such as Seven & i’s attempt to bring Japan’s successful 7-Eleven experience to the United States, which faced numerous hurdles. This comparison highlights the importance of understanding local market dynamics and adapting to public needs, principles that Hangzhou embraces in its pursuit of tech leadership.

There is no doubt that Hangzhou is writing a new chapter in the evolution of technology in China. With DeepSeek and its peers among the “Six Dragons” continuing to flourish, Hangzhou appears well-positioned to incubate new generations of innovations and inventions for the AI era. Amidst this acceleration, we may witness intense competition among major Chinese cities for the title of the country’s “innovation capital.”
