is quantum computing becoming a reality sooner than we imagine? google answers this question with the “willow” chip, which has achieved stunning breakthroughs in error correction.

google has announced new qualitative leaps in the world of quantum computing with the launch of the “willow” chip, featuring 105 qubits. this advancement builds on a series of experimental quantum chips developed by google in recent years, which bore names such as “foxtail”, “bristlecone”, and “sycamore”. however, “willow” stands out with unprecedented performance, prompting some experts to describe it as a historic achievement.

why is “willow” different?

the “willow” chip relies on superconducting qubit technology and comes equipped with innovative techniques to tune qubit frequency and solve the problem of quantum errors. errors represent one of the major challenges in quantum computing, as the performance of sensitive qubits can be subject to interference that leads to lost information or results. however, through new algorithms and precise frequency adjustments, google says it has managed to reduce errors by notable margins, bringing us one step closer to reliable quantum computing.

among willow’s most prominent achievements is its ability to maintain the quantum state of qubits for about 100 microseconds, compared to 20 microseconds in previous generations. this time period may seem short, but it multiplies the time window during which complex calculations can be performed before the qubits lose their distinctive state.

a test of quantum supremacy

to prove the superiority of the “willow” chip, google conducted an experiment known as the “random circuit sampling test”, which aims to compare the performance of a quantum computer with traditional supercomputers. in 2019, google announced that its “sycamore” chip had performed a complex task in 200 seconds, compared to the thousands of years a traditional computer would need. but “willow” surpassed that by leaps and bounds; it managed to execute the task in less than 5 minutes, while the most powerful traditional computer available today is estimated to take roughly 7 septillion years (i.e., a 1 followed by 25 zeros) to complete it. this superiority is due to the increased number of qubits and the exponential growth in computing power with each additional qubit, alongside improvements in error tuning.

toward full quantum error correction

google’s roadmap points to an ambitious goal: building a quantum computer featuring one million operational qubits in under 10 years. to reach this goal, it is necessary to overcome the phase of “instability” that strips the quantum system of its unique capabilities. this highlights the importance of ongoing research into “quantum error correction”, which works to protect the logical qubit using a number of additional physical qubits.

experimental results on “willow” show that adding more qubits led, for the first time, to an actual reduction in the error rate rather than an increase. this is evidence that google is approaching a stage where operational errors can be bypassed and a state known as “fault tolerance” can be achieved, allowing the quantum system to correct multiple errors before the quantum state collapses.

broad future applications

although many believe that quantum computing will not have true commercial viability for many decades, achievements by google and other companies indicate that this day may be closer than we expect. reaching stable quantum computing will open the door to revolutionary computational models in fields such as drug discovery, massive climate data analysis, the development of ultra-strong new materials, and even the optimization of financial algorithms. it can also play a pivotal role in cybersecurity, where data encryption and enhanced network protection demand very high levels of computational capability.

strong competition appears to be on the horizon, as companies like microsoft, ibm, and others work on developing quantum chips using diverse technologies, including trapped ions and neutral atoms. based on this rapid pace of development, we may witness further achievements in coming years that accelerate the entry of quantum computing into the realm of practical applications.

with this announcement, google reaffirms its leadership in the quantum computing race and charts a promising path toward realizing a quantum computer capable of transforming the foundations of technology. the “willow” chip provides realistic proof that quantum computing is now more than just theoretical research or limited experiments. with continued research and cooperation among tech giants, it may not be long before we see daily applications that elevate our quality of life and turn today’s impossible into tomorrow’s reality.
