Google Cloud offers the universal Gemini work agent to enable employees to assign goals and outcomes to systems and return to fully completed tasks.

Announcing the universal agent and shifting office work philosophy

Google Cloud revealed on Thursday during its annual “Gemini at Work 2026” conference the launch of an advanced, independent artificial intelligence agent designed as a “universal agent for enterprise work environments.” This new system features superior capability in receiving complex assignments and tasks, establishing necessary execution steps, and returning to employees with completed results ready for direct use within the applications and software businesses use daily. This development signals clearly the desire of technology giants to replace traditional chatbots with permanent digital assistants capable of performing jobs independently.

Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, explained the new philosophy, stating that users will give the agent “specific goals rather than detailed instructions,” adding: “You delegate the desired outcome and return later to find the work fully completed. To enable the agent to achieve this, we had to connect it to personal workflows, official corporate logs, and approved governance and security controls.” The system is currently available in a private preview phase, paving the way for its upcoming release to business and enterprise plan customers via the Google Workspace platform.

Software integration and coordination across multiple enterprise systems

The company designed its new agent to work seamlessly across web browsers, mobile phones, desktop computers, and command-line programming tools, in addition to direct integration within Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, and Slack suites. It also provides an API allowing it to run behind the scenes without a graphical interface inside third-party applications. Within email tools, documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and chats, employees can summon the agent simply by typing the “Gemini” mention.

Google relies on a flexible routing strategy that allows each subtask to run on the most suitable model; this includes the Gemini model family alongside Anthropic’s Claude models, with plans to integrate other closed and open models in the future. In complex multi-stage tasks, the agent can create sub-agents and coordinate parallel or sequential workflows that may last for hours or days until the required objective is successfully completed.

Four-dimensional memory and creating permanent coworkers

The new system allows work teams to establish permanent “colleague agents” equipped with independent email addresses, dedicated appointment calendars, and custom storage spaces on Google Drive. These agents can only view information and files explicitly and intentionally shared with them by their human coworkers.

The agent is built on an advanced four-dimensional memory architecture that includes: current session memory, semantic memory, procedural memory for workflow steps, and episodic memory to record past experiences. The system connects to databases and popular business platforms such as Salesforce, ServiceNow, Jira, BigQuery, Snowflake, and Microsoft Teams, while offering economic routing features toward cheaper models and imposing strict financial caps that halt the agent’s work immediately upon exhausting the designated budget. Early pilot enterprise customers include global companies such as Shopify and PayPal.

Intensifying race among cloud giants and reliability challenges

This rollout arrives at the height of an intense race among major tech companies; Microsoft updated its Copilot assistant in late September, OpenAI launched permanent “Dot” agents, and Anthropic announced the integration of Claude models directly into Google documents and spreadsheets on October 6.

Despite this exceptional momentum, VentureBeat analyses noted the absence of specific pricing details or timelines for the system’s commercial availability to general enterprises, alongside the need for independent evaluations proving the agent’s reliability in completing cross-application tasks without errors. The platform emphasizes that the wager now centers on earning corporate trust in managing and coordinating sensitive data, even if it requires running models provided by competitors.
