Delta Air Lines sent a clear message to the tech world: artificial intelligence in aviation is here, and it is not just for Silicon Valley.

In a landmark keynote address at the Sphere venue in Las Vegas, Delta CEO Ed Bastian detailed how the century-old airline industry is being reshaped using artificial intelligence. Among the highlights unveiled was the new “Delta Concierge” smart assistant, set to launch in 2025. This tool is designed to handle a range of tasks, from rebooking delayed flights to suggesting the fastest routes to the gate.

Delta’s aviation AI strategy focuses on operational workflows rather than customer-facing chatbots, analyzing traveler feedback, optimizing gate allocations, and reducing wait times for connecting flights. This is part of a broader trend among legacy companies seeking practical applications for artificial intelligence.

The company is working in partnership with Qualtrics to process feedback from roughly 200 million travelers annually, turning that data into personalized experiences. Qualtrics Chairman Ryan Smith said during the presentation: “Experience is the true currency of business today.”

Even in-flight entertainment systems are getting AI-powered upgrades. Through an exclusive partnership with YouTube, Delta will provide ad-free content on seatback screens and personal devices. This move is part of a broader strategy to use artificial intelligence in aviation to deliver personalized content recommendations without eliminating the human touch.

Bastian stated: “At Delta, we don’t use technology just for the sake of technology. We call it innovation with a heart, using technology to create standout experiences while keeping humanity at the core.”

In other non-AI news, Delta unveiled a number of hardware and infrastructure upgrades. The company announced plans to install 4K HDR QLED displays on its aircraft starting in 2026, providing high-definition entertainment for passengers. The screens will also support Bluetooth connectivity across all cabins, allowing travelers to connect their personal wireless devices.

The company also announced plans to launch an air taxi service in partnership with Joby Aviation over the coming years, starting in New York City and Los Angeles. The electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft promise to transform airport arrivals, where a trip that might take 90 minutes by car can be completed in just 10 minutes using Joby aircraft, according to Delta’s presentation.

Over the long term, Delta is collaborating with Airbus to design more fuel-efficient aircraft and increase the use of sustainable fuels. The company aims for sustainable aviation fuel to account for 95% of its consumption by 2050, and the two companies will also cooperate on hydrogen aviation projects and new aerodynamic designs.
