Strategic collaboration in advanced technology

In a move reflecting the growing importance of artificial intelligence in the defense and intelligence sectors, Safran.AI, a subsidiary of French defense giant Safran, announced its collaboration with the United Arab Emirates-based Technology Innovation Institute (TII). This collaboration aims to develop advanced technology that integrates artificial intelligence into geospatial data analysis.

Goal: A next-generation geospatial intelligence platform

The partnership aims to “develop the next generation of field-ready Agentic AI platform for Geospatial Intelligence (GEOINT).” According to the announcement, the partnership will integrate Safran.AI’s operational intelligence architecture with TII’s orchestration technology for continuous all-weather monitoring across diverse imagery sources, providing a comprehensive real-time operational picture.

Shawqi Kasmi, chief researcher at TII, said: “We believe that AI agents, [specifically] the new generation of AI capabilities, can serve clients and end-users better and more efficiently.” He added that the goal is “to drive innovative solutions that will set us apart.”

What is Agentic AI and why does it matter?

Generally speaking, Agentic AI goes a step further than Generative AI. While generative AI can create new content (such as text or images), AI agents are designed to take limited autonomous actions to achieve specific goals. They can interact with their environment, analyze data, and make decisions without constant human intervention.

Moving beyond “what” to “why”

In the case of the arrangement between Safran and TII, the software of both companies can be integrated into command and control systems not only to analyze geospatial imagery, but to assist in decision-making and understanding the broader context.

Francois Bourieis Soubeyran, executive vice president of Safran.AI, explained that the goal is to transform raw data into actionable insights. He said: “What you can do with agentic AI is go to the ‘why’ [moving beyond answering ‘what’]. This is exactly what the end-user wants. Not just ‘what.'”

He added: “What you want to understand is with this type of aircraft at the airport, what is the threat level for this type of operation… It [helps] to understand the situation autonomously.” This level of strategic analysis can be crucial in military and intelligence operations.

Partnership components and practical implementation

According to executives, the two companies will establish three main components under the partnership:

  1. Agentic geospatial reasoning system: To assist operators in decision-making.
  2. AI detector factory: To create and recreate AI models using sovereign data from national sources.
  3. Multi-session autonomous engine: For all-weather geospatial monitoring.

Soubeyran noted that the software will apply the Modular Open Systems Approach (MOSA) concept, meaning that the military or an intelligence agency can easily integrate agentic AI into its existing specialized platforms.

Global ambition and a rapid timeline

Although the partnership was only recently announced, the two companies said they have already launched the AI agent and expect an operational version of the software to be ready within 12 months. Work on the project will take place simultaneously in France and the United Arab Emirates.

The companies’ ambitions are not limited to the Gulf region. Soubeyran said: “It’s not only for the Gulf. It’s not only for the UAE. We truly believe this is something that can bring value to all people who need this type of product.” This partnership represents a model for international cooperation in developing critical AI technologies for national and global security.

Frequently asked questions

Q: What is the goal of the partnership between the UAE’s TII and France’s Safran.AI?
A: The goal is to develop the next generation of Agentic AI platforms for Geospatial Intelligence (GEOINT) to improve data analysis and support autonomous decision-making.

Q: What is the difference between Agentic AI and Generative AI?
A: Generative AI focuses on creating new content (text, images). Agentic AI goes further, being designed to take autonomous actions, analyze data, and make decisions to achieve specific goals without constant human intervention.

Q: How will this technology be used in geospatial intelligence?
A: It will be used to analyze geospatial imagery (such as satellite images) more deeply, not just to identify what is present (such as aircraft type), but to understand the strategic context, intent, and threat level (why it is there and what that means).

Q: When will this system be operational?
A: The two companies expect an operational version of the software to be ready within 12 months.
