Introduction: investing in minds for a digital future

The Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA) announced that Saudi Arabia has successfully trained 334,000 citizens in the field of artificial intelligence through a national initiative launched in September 2024. This ambitious program, developed in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development, aims to equip citizens of all age groups and professions with essential AI skills, marking a massive step toward building a knowledge-based economy.

National initiatives for developing young talent

Among the national initiatives linked to the program, the National Olympiad for Programming and Artificial Intelligence stands out, having attracted participation from more than 260,000 male and female middle and high school students. Of these, 10,000 students qualified for the final stage, demonstrating the scale of interest and passion for these fields among the Kingdom’s younger generation. These competitions are not only aimed at identifying talent, but also at inspiring a new generation of innovators and creators in technology.

Long-term vision for education and innovation

As part of its long-term vision, Saudi Arabia aims to integrate advanced technologies into the national education system, support sustainable innovation, and enhance learning outcomes using artificial intelligence tools and frameworks. This means education will not be limited to the transfer of knowledge, but will rely on interactive and personalized methods that allow each student to learn at their own pace and preferred method. Artificial intelligence can help create customized educational content, provide immediate feedback, and even identify students who may need additional support.

Part of Vision 2030

This large-scale training initiative is part of Saudi Arabia’s broader efforts to build human capital and digital capabilities in line with Vision 2030. This ambitious vision aims to diversify the Kingdom’s economy away from oil, and develop public service sectors such as healthcare, education, infrastructure, entertainment, and tourism. Investing in digital skills and artificial intelligence is considered a cornerstone in achieving these goals, as it enables the national workforce to compete in the new global economy.

Conclusion: building a smart nation

Training more than 330,000 citizens in artificial intelligence skills in less than a year is a major achievement that demonstrates Saudi Arabia’s serious commitment to building a digital future. By investing in its people and equipping them with the tools and knowledge necessary to succeed in the AI era, the Kingdom not only ensures its economic competitiveness, but also positions itself as a key player in shaping the future of technology on the global stage.
