Introduction: From Hollywood to Robotics Valley

Runway has spent the past seven years building advanced visual generation tools that serve the entertainment industry and creators. The New York-based company became famous for its video and image generation models, such as Gen-4. But now, the company sees a new and surprising opportunity for its technology in a completely different field: robotics.

What are “world models”?

Runway’s technology relies on what are called “world models.” These are large models that not only understand text, but can also create a simulated version of the real world, with an intuitive understanding of physics and how objects interact. This ability to simulate reality is what makes its video generation tools so realistic.

Discovering a new opportunity: Unexpected interest

As Runway’s world models improved and became more realistic, the company began receiving unexpected interest from robotics and autonomous vehicle companies. Anastasis Germanidis, co-founder and chief technology officer of Runway, said that working with these companies was not something the company initially envisioned when it launched in 2018.

Why simulation matters for robotics

Robotics companies use Runway technology to simulate training. Training robots and self-driving cars in real-world scenarios alone is extremely expensive, time-consuming, and difficult to scale. For example, to teach an autonomous car how to handle a rare deer crossing the road, you might need to drive millions of miles before that situation occurs. But in a simulated world, you can create this situation thousands of times in minutes.

The Runway advantage: Precise variable control

Germanidis says companies can get immense value from running simulations on Runway’s models because they have the ability to be incredibly specific. Unlike real-world training, these models make it easy to test specific variables and situations without changing anything else in the scenario. He explains: “You can step back and then simulate the effect of different actions… If the car took this turn instead of that one, what would the result be? Generating these scenarios from the same context is really hard in the physical world.”

Competition in the arena: Nvidia is not far behind

Runway is not the only company eyeing this market. For example, Nvidia released the latest version of its world models, Cosmos, along with other robotics training infrastructure. This indicates that the robotics training simulation market is becoming a major competitive arena in the AI industry.

Strategy: Adjusting existing models and forming a specialized team

The company does not expect to launch a “completely separate set of models” for its robotics customers. Instead, Runway will fine-tune its existing models to better serve these industries. The company is also building a dedicated robotics team to lead this expansion. Runway has raised over $500 million from investors like Nvidia and Google, who are backing this expansion.

Conclusion: Simulating the world to serve multiple industries

Runway’s shift toward the robotics industry demonstrates the core principle underlying the company: the idea of world simulation. Germanidis says: “Once you have those really powerful models, you can use them for a wide range of different markets, and a wide variety of different industries.” The ability to create an accurate representation of the world is not only useful for filmmaking, but it is a fundamental technology that can accelerate the development of robotics, autonomous vehicles, and everything that interacts with the physical world. With this step, Runway proves that the future of artificial intelligence is not just about content creation, but about understanding and shaping reality itself.
