OpenAI is developing a new generation of artificial intelligence agents with advanced capabilities, and is expected to launch its new agent, codenamed “Operator”, next January. This agent aims to execute tasks on behalf of users, including programming tasks and booking trips, according to reports by Bloomberg.
“Operator” is planned to be launched initially as a research preview via the application programming interface (API), as OpenAI management explained to employees during an internal meeting on Wednesday that this launch is part of the company’s future strategy in developing autonomous artificial intelligence agents.
New capabilities and advanced potential
Alongside the launch of “Operator”, OpenAI is developing additional tools, including a tool capable of completing tasks via a web browser, which is expected to be ready soon.
On the other hand, Microsoft, a partner and investor in OpenAI, announced last October the ability to build custom autonomous agents via the “Copilot Studio” platform within the “Copilot” feature. These agents are distinguished by their ability to understand the nature of users’ work and act on their behalf. This step comes as part of an integrated strategy for Microsoft and OpenAI toward enhancing artificial intelligence autonomy in performing complex tasks.

In a discussion held last July, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg expressed their vision regarding the future of artificial intelligence, predicting that every organization will have its own agent. Huang pointed to Meta’s “AI Studio” platform, which allows users to create custom agents. Zuckerberg emphasized that the future of business will be completely integrated with artificial intelligence agents, much like websites and social media accounts.
Continuous progress in the ChatGPT engine
On the other hand, OpenAI introduced a new update to the ChatGPT engine in October, enabling it to search the internet and fetch links to trusted sources, allowing users to get comprehensive answers without needing to switch to another search engine. The search feature on ChatGPT works naturally and seamlessly, facilitating interaction and the use of information in real time.
