What is OpenAI?

OpenAI is an American artificial intelligence research organization founded in December 2015 and headquartered in San Francisco, California. Its stated mission is to develop safe and beneficial artificial general intelligence (AGI), which it defines as “highly autonomous systems that outperform humans at most economically valuable work.” As a leading organization in the current artificial intelligence revolution, OpenAI is best known for its GPT family of large language models, the DALL-E series of text-to-image models, and the text-to-video model named Sora. The launch of ChatGPT in November 2022 is credited with sparking widespread interest in generative artificial intelligence technologies.

The organization consists of the non-profit entity OpenAI, registered in Delaware, and a for-profit subsidiary founded in 2019 named OpenAI Global. Microsoft owns approximately 49% of OpenAI’s shares following a $13 billion investment and also provides computing resources via its Microsoft Azure cloud platform.

Legal issues and controversy

In 2023 and 2024, OpenAI faced several copyright infringement lawsuits from authors and media companies whose works were allegedly used to train certain OpenAI products. In November 2023, the OpenAI board of directors fired CEO Sam Altman due to a “loss of confidence” in him, but five days later, he returned to his position after negotiations resulted in the restructuring of the board. Several AI safety researchers left the organization in 2024.

History

2015-2018: Beginnings as a non-profit organization

In December 2015, OpenAI was founded by Sam Altman, Elon Musk, Ilya Sutskever, Greg Brockman, Trevor Blackwell, Vicki Cheung, Andrej Karpathy, Diederik Kingma, John Schulman, Pamela Vagata, and Wojciech Zaremba, with Sam Altman and Elon Musk serving as co-chairs of the board. $1 billion in funding was pledged by Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, Elon Musk, Reid Hoffman, Jessica Livingston, Peter Thiel, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Infosys, and the YC Research foundation. However, total actual contributions through 2019 amounted to only about $130 million.

According to an investigation by TechCrunch, Musk was the largest donor, while YC Research contributed nothing. OpenAI stated that it would freely collaborate with other institutions and researchers by making patents and research public. Initially, the organization was run from Brockman’s living room, then its headquarters moved to the Pioneer Building in the Mission District of San Francisco.

According to Wired magazine, Brockman met with Yoshua Bengio, one of the “founding fathers” of deep learning, drew up a list of top researchers in the field, and managed to hire nine of them as the first employees in December 2015. In 2016, OpenAI paid corporate-level salaries, but did not pay researchers salaries comparable to those offered by Facebook or Google.

Microsoft’s Peter Lee stated that the cost of hiring a top AI researcher exceeds the cost of signing a professional American football player. OpenAI’s goal and mission attracted these researchers to join, with one Google employee stating he was ready to quit his job and join OpenAI due to “the exceptionally strong team and largely because of its mission.” Brockman stated that “the best thing I can imagine is pushing humanity toward building true AI in a safe way.” Zaremba also stated that he turned down “crazy” financial offers worth two to three times his market value to join OpenAI.

In April 2016, OpenAI launched the public beta of the “OpenAI Gym” platform for reinforcement learning research. In August 2016, Nvidia donated the first DGX-1 supercomputer to OpenAI to train larger and more complex AI models, reducing processing time from six days to two hours. In December 2016, OpenAI launched “Universe,” a software platform for measuring and training AI general intelligence across games, websites, and applications.

2019: Transition to capped profit

2019 marked a major turning point in OpenAI’s trajectory, as the organization transitioned from a non-profit entity to a new business model called “capped profit.” This shift was driven by the desire to attract more investment to develop advanced AI technologies. Under this model, investor profits were capped at one hundred times their original investment, allowing the company to strike a balance between attracting capital and maintaining its commitment to its mission of developing safe and beneficial artificial intelligence.

This shift was necessary to attract investments from major venture capital funds, in addition to providing competitive incentives for employees by granting them company equity. The new model enabled the company to hire top AI talent, especially in the face of intense competition with companies like Google and Facebook, which offer massive compensation packages and attractive stock options for researchers.

During that year, OpenAI entered into a strategic partnership with Microsoft, which invested $1 billion in the company. Microsoft’s role was not limited to financial support; its Azure cloud platform also became the foundation for running OpenAI’s systems, providing the company with a robust and fast infrastructure to develop and train AI models at scale. This investment marked the beginning of a long-term strategic relationship between OpenAI and Microsoft, enhancing both companies’ positions in the global AI market.

2020-2023: Launch of ChatGPT and partnership with Microsoft

In 2020, OpenAI launched the advanced language model GPT-3, which is one of the company’s most notable achievements. This model was trained on massive datasets scraped from the internet, enabling it to understand human language and generate human-like text with a high degree of creativity and diversity. GPT-3’s purpose was not limited to answering questions; it also included the ability to translate text between languages, write essays, and even create innovative literary texts.

In 2022, OpenAI launched ChatGPT, an application based on GPT-3 technologies but designed to provide an advanced conversational experience for users. ChatGPT garnered global interest, attracting over 100 million users within just two months of its launch, making it the fastest-growing application in the history of consumer apps.

This success was no accident; ChatGPT delivered an astonishing interactive experience thanks to its ability to understand user prompts and provide precise, customized answers. It also became a versatile tool used in education, creative writing, and business development, helping cement OpenAI’s position as a leader in generative artificial intelligence.

OpenAI strengthened its partnership with Microsoft during this period, as the company continued to rely on the Azure platform to train and run its models. This collaboration enhanced both companies’ capabilities and expanded the range of possible AI applications, making OpenAI a key player in the field.

2024: Public projects and collaboration with Apple

In February 2024, OpenAI announced the new “Sora” text-to-video model, an advanced technical achievement that enhances AI’s ability to handle multimedia more effectively. This model enables the creation of accurate and realistic videos based on text descriptions, paving the way for innovative applications in media, education, and marketing. Although the model is currently available for internal testing by risk assessment teams, OpenAI plans to release it to the public soon, making the technology more comprehensive and accessible to end-users.

Legal challenges and regulatory investigations

In February 2024, OpenAI underwent intense investigations by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The investigations focused on whether internal statements made by CEO Sam Altman were used to mislead investors. This coincided with another investigation by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, ongoing since November 2023, which raised many questions about transparency in the company’s governance and its adherence to its original mission.

Prominent resignations and internal challenges

May 2024 saw dramatic developments within OpenAI, as Ilya Sutskever, the company’s chief scientist, resigned, and Jan Leike, head of the Superalignment team, also announced his departure. Reports indicated that these resignations stemmed from disagreements over the company’s direction and leadership’s lack of transparency and trust. This led to the dissolution of the Superalignment team and the integration of its research into other departments, alarming many observers who saw it as a retreat from commitments to safety and security in AI development.

Strategic partnerships and new expansions

That same month, OpenAI partnered with the Reddit platform to integrate platform content into its products, such as ChatGPT. This collaboration is an important step to improve interaction and provide up-to-date and accurate information, as users can benefit from direct and diverse content to increase the accuracy of the results provided by AI.

The company also entered into partnerships with major media organizations such as News Corp, allowing the integration of content from newspapers like The Wall Street Journal and the New York Post. Nonetheless, OpenAI has faced lawsuits from other media outlets, such as The New York Times, which accused the company of copyright infringement by using its content to train models.

Funding rounds and valuation boost

In October 2024, OpenAI raised $6.6 billion in funding from investors including Microsoft, Nvidia, and SoftBank. This raised the company’s valuation to $157 billion, reflecting growing confidence in its potential and impact in the field of artificial intelligence. However, it drew some criticism regarding the impact of these massive investments on the company’s commitment to transparency and ethical innovation.

New launches and innovative initiatives

During December 2024, OpenAI unveiled several innovations during its “12 Days of OpenAI” event, including:

  • Sora model: A tool for generating high-quality videos from text, available to ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers.
  • o1 model: Designed to provide sequential reasoning that enhances the accuracy and transparency of AI-driven decisions.
  • ChatGPT Pro service: A $200 monthly subscription providing unlimited access to advanced models.

Future vision

With its ongoing expansion and strategic partnerships, OpenAI continues working toward its vision of developing powerful and safe artificial intelligence that serves humanity. Despite legal and regulatory challenges, the company strives to innovate in new fields, focusing on balancing innovation and ethics to ensure a brighter future for humanity.
