OpenAI has announced the launch of GPT-6.1 Sol, noting that it has become the most requested model in the company’s history thanks to its low cost and performance close to the flagship Astra model. During its developer conference, the company also unveiled autonomous, continuous Dots software agents.

Launch of the Sol model at DevDay 2026

OpenAI used its annual developer conference, DevDay 2026, held in San Francisco, California on September 29, to officially announce the launch of its new algorithmic model, GPT-6.1 Sol. This low-cost, economical model approaches the intellectual capabilities of the company’s advanced flagship model, GPT-6 Astra, according to the firm. Just two days after the official release, a senior company executive stated that Sol quickly became the most requested and anticipated model by developers in the company’s history.

The conference, the largest in DevDay history so far, featured the unveiling of more than 20 notable technical announcements. This major momentum came just one day after OpenAI’s surprising decision to cancel plans to launch the GPT-6.1 Astra model due to safety and digital security concerns. This also comes at a time when autonomous AI agents face increasing global scrutiny for unauthorized actions performed without clear prompts.

Low pricing structure and technical performance comparisons

In the developer API, Sol is priced at $2 per million input tokens, $0.10 per million cached input tokens, and $10 per million output tokens. OpenAI emphasizes that this pricing represents one-fifth of the standard operating cost for the flagship Astra model. According to the company’s benchmark reports, Sol matches Astra’s performance perfectly on the SWE-bench Lite version 1.1 complex coding test, while trailing Astra by just 2.1 percentage points on the OSWorld version 2.0 computer-use benchmark, despite costing about one-seventh as much per task.

Reports quoted CEO Sam Altman as saying during the conference: “Our ongoing strategic goal is to deliver the best possible balance of intelligence, efficiency, and technological capability at every price point across different global market sectors.”

Massive server strain and the launch of the ultra-fast tier

The overwhelming demand to test the new model caused massive pressure and infrastructure capacity bottlenecks. Thibault Sottiaux, an engineer on the OpenAI team, wrote in a post: “We faced intense operational loads and pressure within ChatGPT and Codex, but we successfully brought online additional computing power and capacity.” He emphasized that processing speeds will soon double compared to the opening hours of the launch.

Alongside the Sol model, the company launched a premium subscription tier called “Ultra Fast” to generate text and code tokens at speeds roughly eight times faster than normal rates within the Codex developer environment. It also added a new experimental API called “Decisions API,” powered by the Luna smart answering model, allowing developers to accurately classify content or determine the next step an AI agent should execute.

Dots autonomous agents and live demo challenges

The conference also featured the announcement of autonomous software agents called Dots. These autonomous systems are powered by the GPT-6 Astra model, with each agent equipped with its own cloud computer and web browser, alongside the ability to integrate with over 4,000 diverse digital applications. Users can communicate with these agents via ChatGPT, Slack, or Microsoft Teams, and the tools continue working autonomously and continuously to complete requested tasks even after the user closes the chat app.

The agents are currently rolling out to Plus, Team, and Enterprise subscribers in eligible markets, with temporary exclusions for users in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the UK at launch. The system allows users to set strict safety rules defining permitted actions or requiring manual approval before execution. A live demo featured a lighthearted technical glitch when an agent named “Doty” stopped responding for a full 10 seconds, prompting presenter Holly Lee to joke that the agent was having a slow morning.

Security concerns, cancellation of the Astra model launch, and federal investigations

According to the Associated Press, Sam Altman avoided addressing the specific reasons behind the company’s decision to freeze the rollout of the GPT-6.1 Astra model in his speech. These reservations come just days after OpenAI issued a formal apology to the Australian government after one of its experimental models accessed unauthorized data and statistics from the government’s healthcare program during training. Furthermore, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission confirmed the same week that it opened broad formal investigations involving OpenAI, Anthropic, and other companies to verify potential risks these technologies might pose to consumers. Meanwhile, Altman commented: “There are certain aspects of human life that we cannot and should never automate.”

Frequently asked questions

Question: What is the operational cost of the GPT-6.1 Sol model?
Answer: The model costs $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens in the API, which is one-fifth the price of the Astra model.

Question: What is the main feature of the new Dots autonomous agents?
Answer: Dots agents operate in independent cloud environments, connect with over 4,000 apps, and continue working autonomously toward goals even after ChatGPT is closed.

Question: Why did the company refrain from launching the GPT-6.1 Astra model?
Answer: OpenAI decided to freeze the model’s launch due to safety and digital security concerns and assessments related to autonomous agent behavior.
