During its annual developer conference, OpenAI revealed radical updates to the Codex ecosystem, led by reusable cloud development environments that separate programming tasks from individual devices and allow continuous work across various devices.

Transformation of Codex into a native cloud ecosystem

OpenAI unveiled a wide range of qualitative upgrades for its software engineering agent, Codex, during its annual developer conference, DevDay, held in San Francisco on Tuesday. At the forefront of these updates is the provision of reusable cloud development environments that decouple code writing tasks from reliance on a single computer.

The new cloud environments allow developers to run Codex from any device they have—whether a laptop, smartphone, or via remote cloud connection—with the ability to instantly resume work from where they left off in previous sessions without any loss of data or computing context.

Elimination of isolation constraints and shared work environments

Previously, every cloud task created by Codex was treated as a temporary virtual isolation environment that was deleted at the end of the work, which forced re-setting tools every time. Now, technical teams can configure code repositories, supporting tools, and permission packages just once, and then launch independent and concurrent programming tasks from that shared environment.

OpenAI emphasized that these shared environments are designed to help developers start projects at lightning speed and provide a unified workspace with approved settings that suit enterprise requirements. This feature is available to subscribers of Plus, Pro, and Business tiers, in addition to healthcare, education, and enterprise accounts.

Voice control features and automated code review

Alongside the cloud environments, the company launched innovative complementary tools; Codex’s command-line interface now supports natural language voice commands, allowing developers to start and direct tasks simply by speaking. It also provided a new interface called “Agents” to help users delegate tasks and track the execution of multiple programming tracks simultaneously.

The company introduced an advanced code review experience integrated directly into the ChatGPT desktop app, where programmers can read smart summaries and review changes before posting feedback on pull requests on GitHub or merge requests on GitLab, speeding up the code quality inspection cycle.

Cloud security suite and ultra-fast processing speed

On the security front, the company launched the Codex Security Cloud platform, an advanced suite of tools to scan entire GitHub repositories on demand, on a schedule, or upon committing new code, integrating automatically with the Daybreak Blue cybersecurity initiative models without the need for separate applications.

The expanded announcements included the launch of a real-time decision API and an update to the agent interface to include computer interface control and integration with Amazon Web Services clients. The company also announced an “ultra-fast” tier that increases the Codex token generation rate by 8x to reach 300 tokens per second, allowing Codex to continue working around the clock even while the developer’s personal computer is shut down.

These successive field developments reflect the transformation of Codex from a mere developer assistance tool into an independent cloud infrastructure operating in the background to manage projects and review code quality around the clock.

Frequently asked questions

Question: What is the primary feature of the new Codex cloud environments?
Answer: They enable the continuation of programming tasks and running them across various devices and clouds while sharing repositories and settings among team members.

Question: How do programmers benefit from the new voice control feature in Codex?
Answer: Programmers can direct commands and initiate programming tasks through the command interface via direct voice speaking.

Question: What is the maximum speed provided by the new ultra-fast tier in Codex?
Answer: Generation speed reaches 300 tokens per second, achieving an acceleration of up to 8 times compared to previous rates.
