Introduction: Targeting desk gamers
While many console gamers prefer playing on large living room TVs, there is a growing segment of players who prefer gaming at their desks using dedicated gaming monitors. Recognizing this trend, Sony has announced a new 27-inch monitor tailored specifically for PlayStation 5 owners looking for a more focused and competitive gaming experience.
Technical specifications: High resolution and fast refresh rates
The new monitor comes with specs that place it among premium gaming displays. It features a 2560 x 1440 (QHD) resolution, which provides an excellent balance between visual clarity and performance. The monitor also supports HDR (High Dynamic Range) with auto HDR tone mapping during setup, ensuring richer colors and deeper contrast in supported games.
More importantly for gamers is the support for Variable Refresh Rates (VRR). When connected to a PS5 or PS5 Pro, the monitor can reach a refresh rate of up to 120Hz, delivering a smooth and responsive gaming experience. However, the monitor is not limited to console use only; when connected to a PC or Mac, the refresh rate can reach up to 240Hz, making it an excellent choice for competitive PC gaming as well.
The unique feature: Built-in DualSense charging stand
The feature that truly sets this monitor apart from competitors is a thoughtful addition designed specifically for the PlayStation ecosystem. The monitor features a unique hook that flips down from the back of the display to hold and charge a PS5 DualSense controller. This is a great convenience feature that helps keep the desk clean and ensures your controller is always ready for action.
Although the hook holds only a single controller, it is an innovative addition you won’t find on other gaming monitors, demonstrating Sony’s commitment to creating accessories that enhance the overall PlayStation experience.
Connectivity and compatibility
The monitor offers a robust set of connectivity options to accommodate various gaming setups. It includes two HDMI ports and one DisplayPort for connecting a console and a PC simultaneously. It also features a built-in USB hub, with one USB-C port and two USB-A ports for accessories such as the PlayStation Link wireless headset adapter.
For audio, the monitor includes built-in stereo speakers, but also provides a 3.5mm audio jack for using wired headphones for those who prefer a more immersive sound experience.
Design and gaming experience
The monitor is expected to align with the design aesthetic of the PlayStation 5, featuring a mix of black and white colors and futuristic curves. The 27-inch display is designed to be ideal for desktop gaming, providing a wide field of view without being too large to use comfortably up close.
The combination of high resolution, fast refresh rates, and support for HDR and VRR ensures that players will get the most out of their PS5 hardware, especially in fast-paced games where every frame matters.
Availability and expected pricing
Sony has not announced specific pricing yet, but given the specs and unique features, it is expected to sit in the mid-to-high tier of gaming monitors. Sony says the 27-inch PlayStation gaming monitor with the DualSense charging hook will launch in the United States and Japan sometime in 2026.
This monitor marks Sony’s return to the dedicated console monitor market, with its last monitor appearing in 2011 for the PS3 featuring a 24-inch panel and 3D capabilities. This new product shows how gaming priorities have evolved, with focus now shifting toward resolution, speed, and convenience.
