A solution to the global energy crisis

The main driver behind this project is not saving space, but saving energy. Ground-based data centers consume massive amounts of electricity and water, and grids in many countries are beginning to fail to meet demand. Musk believes that space provides unlimited and continuous solar energy, away from the constraints of terrestrial grids. He said in a recent podcast: “Within 30 months, space will be the most economically viable place for artificial intelligence.”

Beginning engineering recruitment

Company officials confirmed the start of searching for engineering talent to execute the project, including “space laser engineers.” Laser technologies are essential to connect these orbital centers to each other and to the Earth to ensure ultra-fast data transmission.

Economic viability challenges

Despite the idea’s appeal, the project faces skepticism from experts. Energy costs represent a small fraction of operating terrestrial centers, while launch and maintenance costs in space will be extremely prohibitive. However, Musk is betting on his Starship rockets’ ability to radically reduce the costs of accessing space, making the economic equation possible.
