From “Vibe Coding” to “Vibe Working”

You may have heard of “vibe coding”—where beginners write applications by generating a simple prompt for artificial intelligence—but now Microsoft wants to introduce something similar for its Office apps. The software maker is launching a new “Agent Mode” in Excel and Word that can create complex spreadsheets and documents with just a prompt. It is also launching a new “Office Agent” in Copilot chat, powered by Anthropic models, which can create PowerPoint presentations and Word documents through a bot operating with a “vibe working” approach.

Agent Mode Explained: How It Works

Agent Mode is essentially a more powerful version of the Copilot experience Microsoft added to its Office apps. It takes a complex task and breaks it down into steps with planning and logic that you can follow. It then uses OpenAI’s GPT-5 model to break each document generation step down into an agent task and execute it. It’s like watching an automated macro in real time, displaying everything it does in a sidebar.

Agent Mode in Excel: Making the Complex Simple

Agent Mode is designed to make complex parts of Excel accessible to users who are not experts. Sumit Chauhan, corporate vice president of the Office Product Group at Microsoft, said: “It’s not just short, simple help answers; it’s presentation- or meeting-ready documents. It’s work, frankly, that a first-year consultant would do, delivered in minutes.”

Microsoft says Agent Mode in Excel has an accuracy rate of 57.2% on SpreadsheetBench, a benchmark evaluating an AI model’s real-world spreadsheet editing capability. This result puts it ahead of competitors, though it still falls short of human accuracy at 71.3%.

Agent Mode in Word: Turning Writing into a Conversation

Agent Mode in Word goes beyond current AI writing, rewriting, and summarizing features. Chauhan says: “Agent Mode in Word turns document creation into vibe writing, an interactive and conversational experience.” It allows Copilot to draft content, suggest improvements, and clarify requested elements during the document creation process. You can do things like generate a monthly report with data from previous months and have Copilot summarize the highlights for the month and variances from a previous report.

New Office Agent in Copilot: Generating Full Presentations

Microsoft’s new Office Agent will also be available outside of Office apps via Copilot chat. Powered by Anthropic models, it can generate full PowerPoint presentations or Word documents from a chat prompt. Office Agent can generate fully structured PowerPoint presentations, all while conducting web research and providing a live slide preview.

Anthropic Model Integration: Microsoft Diversifies Partners

Office Agent also marks another entry point for AI models from Anthropic into Microsoft 365 applications and services. Microsoft has already embraced OpenAI’s rival to improve its products. Now, Anthropic’s AI models are capable of producing Word and PowerPoint documents from Microsoft’s Copilot chat interface. Chauhan said: “We are committed to OpenAI, but we are beginning to explore the family of models to understand the power that different models bring.”

Availability and Rollout

Agent Mode in Copilot for Excel and Word will be available today in the Frontier program for Microsoft 365 Copilot customers or Microsoft 365 Personal / Family subscribers. Agent Mode in Excel and Word is available only in web versions at launch, with desktop support coming soon. Office Agent is also available today in the Frontier program for US subscribers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: What is “vibe working”?
A1: It is a new term describing the use of simple, conversational natural language prompts to direct an AI agent to perform complex office tasks, such as generating a complete financial report or presentation, without requiring detailed technical knowledge.

Q2: Will this replace the need to learn Excel and Word?
A2: Not necessarily. While it makes complex tasks easier, understanding the basics of the applications remains important for verifying, editing, and customizing the AI’s work. It can be viewed as a powerful assistant rather than a complete replacement.

Q3: Why is Microsoft using Anthropic models instead of just OpenAI?
A3: Microsoft seeks to use the best model for each specific task. Anthropic models may excel in certain types of tasks (such as structured content generation), while OpenAI models may be better at others. This gives Microsoft flexibility and reduces its reliance on a single vendor.
