Microsoft has announced the launch of its first artificial intelligence model designed specifically to support cybersecurity tasks. Alongside this, the company introduced Project Perception, which aims to monitor and protect enterprise environments from growing threats using AI agents.

In a fundamental shift reflecting the growing role and impact of smart technology in protecting digital systems, tech giant Microsoft announced on Monday the launch of “MAI Cyber One Flash,” the first artificial intelligence model designed and trained specifically and exclusively to perform cybersecurity tasks. Alongside this revolutionary and innovative model, the company proudly unveiled “Project Perception,” an advanced, autonomous security system relying entirely on a group of artificial intelligence agents designed specifically to monitor and continuously and proactively defend technical environments and complex enterprise networks without interruption. These dual tech announcements represent the company’s most direct and powerful step yet into the AI-backed cybersecurity market, transforming the technology into an integrated and standalone commercial product, sparking fierce competition with traditional security firms and setting new standards for how vulnerabilities are discovered and systems secured globally.

Cyber model designed to lower operational costs

The new “MAI Cyber One Flash” model is a compact, highly efficient software model derived and built upon the “MAI Thinking One” model lineage, the advanced and wider-capable logical reasoning model unveiled by the company during its Build 2026 developer conference last June. This relatively small and smart model has been successfully and fully integrated into “Mdash,” an advanced Microsoft-created platform dedicated to identifying, classifying, and fixing software vulnerabilities using multiple technical agents. This model was meticulously designed to handle about 90 percent of routine and repetitive security tasks with extreme efficiency and speed, allowing systems to spare the use of larger and more costly frontier models—such as GPT-5.4—and restrict their use solely to handling very complex and exceptional security problems that require a higher degree of analysis and logical correlation.

Clear superiority in tests and independent evaluation

This compact security system achieves an exceptional and high grade of 96 percent in CyberGym tests, a rigorous and neutral technical benchmark simulating 1,500 real-world security vulnerabilities, which has quickly become the trusted global industry standard for evaluating the actual security capabilities of AI systems. The company confidently asserts that this high score places its system a full 12 points ahead of Anthropic’s competing Mythos system, in addition to saving nearly 50 percent in total operational costs compared to the previous best technical and security configuration adopted by the company. Mustafa Suleyman, CEO of Microsoft AI, and Hayat Galoub co-authored the official launch announcement, describing the new model as built entirely from scratch for the sole and specific purpose of finding the most complex and dangerous vulnerabilities in massive codebases. The model underwent rigorous testing by the company’s internal red team, adversarial evaluation operations, and independent third-party reviews to ensure the highest degrees of reliability and safety.

Project Perception and the security agent ecosystem

Simultaneously with the launch of this pioneering model, Microsoft introduced Project Perception to the world, an agentic security platform tasked with command and coordination among multiple, interconnected teams of autonomous AI agents to work within simultaneous and complex security workflows. This platform builds its core capabilities on the deep vulnerability discovery features provided by the Mdash system, expanding these capabilities horizontally and vertically to include continuous monitoring tasks, automated patching and code fixes, and the immediate and effective closing of discovered threat paths. This project had been under development and secret testing for several months, with previous media reports published by organizations like The Information and sites like TechRepublic describing this ambitious system as a multi-model platform capable of smartly routing any security task to the AI system most capable and cheapest to handle it, whether that system belongs to Microsoft, OpenAI, or Anthropic, to ensure the highest degrees of effectiveness and savings.

Future vision and expanding security ambitions

These consecutive and powerful announcements come at a time when Microsoft’s Mdash system has proven its utmost effectiveness and real, tangible impact on the ground, successfully discovering 16 severe vulnerabilities in Windows network infrastructure during last May alone, including 4 critical vulnerabilities allowing remote code execution and system hijacking. In addition, the system achieved other important security discoveries involving vital components such as Hyper-V, Active Directory, and the operating kernel in June. The New York Times reported in its Monday report that inputs and data from the MAI Cyber One Flash model will be directly and continuously fed into the core of Project Perception. Microsoft emphasized its broad ambition that this project will not be limited only to code patching work, but will later expand to include more complex and comprehensive security operations across the entire infrastructure, to be provided as a core service initially for enterprise Microsoft Defender and network protection users.

Frequently asked questions

Question: What distinguishes Microsoft’s new artificial intelligence model from other models?
