Introduction
Meta announced on Wednesday that it is adding new video editing capabilities to the Meta AI platform, enabling users to modify short-form videos using ready-made AI prompts to change outfits, locations, and styles. With these new features, the company challenges competitors like Google, which has consistently added generative AI video tools to its applications, alongside other AI-powered editing platforms such as the Captions app.
New features
The company is rolling out these editing tools in the Meta AI app, on the Meta.ai website, and in its CapCut competitor called Edits in the United States. Meta says these features were inspired by its MovieGen artificial intelligence models, though it remains unclear whether the company is actually using those models to power the editing tools.
Availability and platforms
Currently, users will have to make do with 50 ready-made presets for editing a 10-second video. Meta stated that it gathered feedback and insights from creators to build these presets so they can be easily integrated into the Edits app.
Ready-made presets
These presets can, for example, apply a “vintage comic book” style to a video, change the scene’s lighting to look like a rainy day, or swap the clothing of the person appearing in the video to an astronaut suit, to name a few. Users can share the edited videos directly to Facebook and Instagram through the Edits and Meta AI apps.
Future plans
Meta stated that it plans to add more customization options later this year. A company blog post read: “We created these tools… so that everyone can experiment creatively and make fun, engaging videos to share with friends, family, and followers.” It added, “Whether you’re reimagining a favorite family memory or looking for new ways to entertain your audience, our video editing tools can help you do that.”}
Conclusion
The Meta AI platform already features image generation capabilities across its various services. Through this video editing feature, Meta appears to want more creators to use its own tools instead of resorting to third-party applications.
