From trending virtual personalities to “faceless” channels generating massive profits, this article explores how artificial intelligence is reshaping the YouTube content industry, sparking debate about the future of creativity and so-called “AI slop.”

Introduction: A YouTube star is not human

One of the most popular gaming YouTubers goes by the name “Bloo.” With wavy blue hair and dark blue eyes, he has amassed 2.5 million subscribers and over 700 million views playing games like Grand Theft Auto and Roblox. But Bloo is not human; he is a “VTuber” (virtual YouTuber), a fully digital character powered by artificial intelligence. In an interview, Bloo says: “I’m here to keep millions of viewers around the world entertained. Humans made me, but AI enhanced me.”

Why virtual YouTubers?

Bloo was created by veteran YouTuber Jordi van den Bosch, known as “Kwebbelkop.” After years of hard work, van den Bosch found himself unable to keep up with the demands of continuous content creation. He said: “It turns out the flaw in this equation is the human, so we need to remove the human somehow… A virtual YouTuber was the only option.” The result was astonishingly successful, with Bloo already generating seven-figure revenues.

Hybrid technology: Human and machine

Currently, many virtual YouTubers like Bloo are “puppeteered,” meaning a real human controls the character’s voice and movements in real-time using motion-tracking technology. However, everything else on the channel—from video thumbnails to dubbing in other languages—is handled by AI technologies from companies like ElevenLabs, OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic. Van den Bosch’s long-term goal is for Bloo’s character and the content creation process to be run entirely by artificial intelligence.

“Faceless” channels and new business models

Virtual YouTubers represent part of a broader trend toward the rise of “faceless” AI channels. These channels are run by creators who use AI tools to produce videos with completely artificially generated images and voiceovers, enabling them to earn thousands of dollars a month without ever appearing on camera. One such creator, known as “GoldenHand,” says: “My goal is to scale to 50 channels.” His team publishes up to 80 videos a day across his network, mostly targeting audiences over the age of 65.

The dark side: The era of “AI slop”

As AI-generated content becomes more common, concerns about its impact are growing. Some worry about the spread of misinformation, while others are frustrated by the sheer volume of low-quality content flooding their feeds. This material is often referred to as “AI slop”—low-quality content generated randomly using artificial intelligence.

Henry Ajder, founder of Latent Space Advisory, says: “The era of slop is inevitable… I’m not sure what we do about it.” Users complain about the difficulty of finding meaningful or original material, especially on apps like TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram.

Conclusion: Creativity or digital pollution?

AI content creators argue that it is simply a matter of supply and demand; as long as content gets clicks, there is no reason to stop producing it. Others believe there is inherent artistic value in this type of content, and that poor-quality content has always existed on the internet. The rise of virtual YouTubers and AI channels represents a crossroads for the content industry. On one hand, it opens up new horizons for creativity and business models. On the other hand, it raises profound challenges regarding authenticity, quality, and the future of the digital space we all share.
