Historical shift from litigation to investment

The world’s three largest record companies have acquired direct equity stakes in generative artificial intelligence company Stability AI, in a move that represents a crucial strategic turning point for the art production sector, which has spent years engaged in bitter legal disputes against tech companies accusing them of intellectual property violations.

Universal Music Group, Sony Music Group, and Warner Music Group joined Stability AI’s $76 million Series B funding round announced on Tuesday, alongside global video game company Electronic Arts and investment funds AMD Ventures and Pacific Alliance Ventures. This brings Stability AI’s cumulative funding to $232 million under the leadership of CEO Prem Akkaraju, who took the helm in June 2024 following the resignation of founder Emad Mostaque amid management turmoil and mass employee resignations.

Funding round details and investor identity

The major production companies’ investment comes as the culmination of a series of gradual technological partnerships; Universal forged an alliance with Stability AI in October 2025 to co-develop artificial intelligence tools for music, Warner announced a similar partnership the following month, while Sony Music emerged among the new shareholders in the round.

This move reflects a comprehensive reset of the power balance in the entertainment industry. Universal previously settled its legal dispute with generative music platform Audio before finalizing its partnership with Stability, and a German court ruled against Suno in July regarding music copyright in the first European decision of its kind, at a time when Stability AI still faces some legal claims related to other divisions of its generative business.

Licensed models strategy and the Stable Audio model

The new funding strategy is built on the success of launching the Stable Audio 3.0 model family last May, which are audio artificial intelligence models trained entirely on legally licensed data and musical pieces capable of producing complete tracks exceeding 6 minutes in duration, available to musicians and producers via digital audio workstation plugins and the web.

Prem Akkaraju stated: “This unique group of investors is a validation of our vision to empower every producer, musician, and storyteller through generative artificial intelligence. Stability stands out in this space because we are creators building tools for creators.” The company affirmed in its statement: “Artist-centric artificial intelligence will only prevail if the producer experience on licensed platforms is vastly superior to the experience on unlicensed platforms.”

Board of directors and restructuring in Los Angeles

The company underwent fundamental adjustments to its governance structure; Thomas Laffont, co-founder of Coatue, joined Stability AI’s board of directors alongside global director James Cameron, entrepreneur Sean Parker, Dana Settle from Greylock, and CEO Prem Akkaraju, with participation from previous investors such as Eric Schmidt and Cadence Capital.

The company, founded in London in 2019, closed its UK office and relocated its headquarters to Los Angeles, repositioning itself as a maker of specialized tools for professionals in music, gaming, and entertainment, abandoning the unconstrained open-source ambitions that characterized its early beginnings.
