Can you imagine a world connected by a submarine cable larger than Earth’s circumference? This is what Meta aspires to achieve through Project Waterworth, which will change the equation of digital communication.

Meta has announced an ambitious plan to build a submarine cable spanning up to 50,000 kilometers, exceeding the Earth’s circumference of roughly 40,000 kilometers. Known as “Project Waterworth,” the initiative aims to connect the United States with a number of key countries such as India, Brazil, and South Africa. The company seeks to enhance data transfer speeds and accommodate the anticipated surge in the use of artificial intelligence-driven applications.

The importance of submarine cables

Submarine cables serve as the primary nervous system of the global internet, carrying more than 95% of intercontinental data traffic at speeds approaching the speed of light. They rely on fiber-optic technology, which enables high capacities for information transmission. In light of this development, Meta confirmed that the new project will provide 24 pairs of optical fibers, compared to current systems that feature only 8 or 16 pairs. This means that Project Waterworth will double data transmission capacity, paving the way for the development of broader artificial intelligence applications and other fields.

Project goals and impact on artificial intelligence

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, believes that this multi-billion-dollar investment will strengthen the company’s ability to support artificial intelligence models, especially as Meta aspires to build massive data centers to train language models and generative AI. This massive cable is expected to reduce latency and increase application response times, positively impacting a wide range of AI-related services, including image and video recognition technologies and voice assistants.

Challenges and security

Despite great optimism surrounding the project, challenges remain regarding securing the cables and protecting them from various risks. Some regions have witnessed incidents of submarine cable cuts due to ship anchors or fishing activities, alongside mutual accusations regarding the potential for cables to be targeted by sabotage. Meta noted that Project Waterworth will include additional reinforcement in shallow areas down to depths of 7 kilometers, in addition to adopting techniques to bury cables deeper along certain vulnerable routes.

Investment and timeline

Meta has not disclosed the exact cost of the project, but indicated that it is a massive multi-year investment. With reports suggesting spending could surpass the $10 billion mark, observers expect this step to translate into significant improvements in infrastructure capacity to handle the steady increase in digital applications and the expansion of streaming and cloud gaming services. Work on the cable is scheduled to begin soon, with completion expected by the end of the current decade or shortly thereafter.

Global implications

If Meta successfully lays this giant cable as planned, Project Waterworth could become a new standard in the submarine cable industry. It may also push competitors to adopt similar technologies, increasing the rapid deployment of high-speed internet networks in developing countries suffering from weak infrastructure. Furthermore, the project could help bridge the digital divide between developed and developing nations, creating broader opportunities for businesses and individuals to enter the digital economy market.

In light of this trend, Meta appears determined to solidify its leadership in artificial intelligence and internet services by providing a global infrastructure worthy of its future ambitions. If Project Waterworth succeeds in achieving its goals, it will mark a qualitative leap in the world of digital communication and open new horizons in artificial intelligence development and technical innovation on a global scale.
