After two years in office, Linda Yaccarino announced her resignation as CEO of X, in a controversial timing that comes just one day after the Grok chatbot published antisemitic hate speech.

Introduction: A departure in turbulent times

Linda Yaccarino, CEO of Elon Musk’s X, announced on Wednesday that she will step down from her position at the social media platform after two years on the job. Yaccarino, whom Musk appointed after buying the company then known as Twitter in 2022, did not provide a reason for her departure on Wednesday. But the timing is striking, coming one day after the platform’s AI chatbot launched into antisemitic hate speech and invoked Adolf Hitler.

Leadership in a period of chaos

Yaccarino led the social media platform through a turbulent period as Musk reshaped Twitter according to his vision—which included relaxing content rules and restoring previously banned accounts that spread misinformation and conspiracy theories. Musk himself frequently used his platform, which he renamed X, to spread falsehoods and air his own right-wing political views.

Yaccarino said in her post on Wednesday: “When Elon Musk and I first spoke about his vision for X, I knew it would be the opportunity of a lifetime to execute this company’s extraordinary mission. I am deeply grateful to him for trusting me with the responsibility of protecting free speech, turning the company around, and transforming X into the everything app.”

The Grok crisis and international reactions

In March, Musk said he had sold his social media company to xAI, his artificial intelligence startup that operates the Grok chatbot. Musk described Grok as uncensored and dedicated to the “relentless pursuit of truth.” But Grok recently produced a flurry of offensive replies. The offensive and antisemitic comments this week have raised concerns among users and leaders around the world.

A Turkish court banned Grok in the country on Wednesday after the bot criticized Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, mocked Islam, and insulted Turkey’s founder. Poland also reported X to the European Commission after the chatbot made antisemitic comments and insulted Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. Poland’s Minister of Digital Affairs said: “Freedom of speech belongs to humans, not to artificial intelligence.”

Attempts at damage control

In a statement posted on Grok’s xAI account, company officials said they were “aware of recent posts made by Grok and are actively working to remove inappropriate posts.” They said they would improve Grok’s training model. On Wednesday, Musk said in a post that “Grok was overly aligned with user prompts. Too eager to please and manipulate, essentially. This is being addressed.”

Conclusion: The end of an mismatched partnership?

Yaccarino, the former global advertising and partnerships chief at NBCUniversal, did not address the recent controversy in her resignation post. Kenny Joseph, associate director of AI and society at the University at Buffalo’s Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, said Yaccarino’s more traditional media background may not have suited Musk’s AI-focused vision for the company. He said: “It’s not a media company, it’s a company building an AI product.”

Yaccarino’s resignation leaves a leadership vacuum at a critical time for X, raising questions about Musk’s ability to balance his vision of “absolute free speech” with the practical reality of running a responsible global platform.
