Introduction: The ambitious Project Prometheus

Jeff Bezos, the founder and former CEO of Amazon, has quietly begun work on a massive new artificial intelligence project known as “Project Prometheus.” This project, which aims to revolutionize advanced manufacturing, has secured massive financial backing and attracted top-tier artificial intelligence talent. In a move to strengthen its technical capabilities, recent reports revealed that the project secretly acquired a startup specializing in a promising field known as “agentic computing.”

This acquisition followed a private dinner in San Francisco between entrepreneur Vivek Bajaj, who works with Bezos on the project, and Sharil Ozer, co-founder of General Agents and a former researcher at DeepMind and Tesla.

What is Project Prometheus and what is its goal?

Project Prometheus is an ambitious initiative backed by $6.2 billion in funding, including investments from Bezos himself. According to sources familiar with the matter, the project focuses on developing artificial intelligence systems capable of supporting the manufacturing of complex products, such as computers, automobiles, and even spacecraft. The goal is to use artificial intelligence to improve efficiency and innovation in manufacturing operations on a large scale.

The project now employs over 100 people. The New York Times recently revealed that Bezos and Bajaj will serve as co-CEOs of the project, underscoring the strategic importance of this initiative for Bezos after stepping down as Amazon’s CEO in 2021.

The secret acquisition of General Agents

The acquisition of General Agents was not previously announced. Corporate records in Delaware show that Bajaj formed an entity to acquire the company the morning after his dinner with Ozer in June. The merger with the startup took place just four days later. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Two days after the acquisition, William Goss, co-founder of General Agents and a former OpenAI researcher, posted a request on social media looking to connect with people working in the U.S. manufacturing sector, expressing a desire to understand the field and tour some factories, which aligns with the goals of Project Prometheus.

What is agentic computing? Explaining the “Ace” technology

Ozer founded General Agents last year, and the company launched its first technology this past April under the name “Ace.” This technology is described as a “real-time computer pilot.” Simply put, “Ace” is a type of software known as a “computer agent,” which can take control of a computer and execute actions based on user commands.

These tools belong to the category of agentic computing, which aims to automate everyday computer tasks that span across various applications. For example, one of Ace’s demonstration videos shows it downloading an image from Google and sending it to someone via iMessage in under 15 seconds, without requiring user intervention at every step.

How Ace fits into Prometheus’s plans remains entirely unclear, but this technology will likely be used to automate complex tasks in design and manufacturing environments, saving significant time and effort.

The team and participating expertise

Project Prometheus includes a group of prominent experts in the field of artificial intelligence. In addition to Ozer, Goss, and their team from General Agents, other AI researchers quietly joined the project earlier this year, including Kamyar Azizzadenesheli, former principal research scientist at Nvidia.

Ashish Vaswani and Jacob Uszkoreit, former Google researchers who co-authored the famous AI paper (“Attention Is All You Need,” which introduced the transformer architecture), are also serving as founding advisors to Prometheus while managing their own startups. This aggregation of talent signals the project’s seriousness and grand ambitions.

The importance of speed in automation

Competitors believe that the true strength of General Agents lies in its speed. Harsha Abeygunasekera, co-founder and CEO of Donely, which makes a competing product to Ace, says: “There is something significant there for Prometheus to acquire the entire company. What General Agents really achieved early on is speed—Ace runs on your computer at lightning speed. We have been working on that for six months and haven’t achieved it yet.”

This speed in executing tasks could be crucial in manufacturing environments that require immediate response and high precision, which explains Project Prometheus’s specific interest in this technology.

Frequently asked questions

1. What is the primary goal of Project Prometheus?
To develop artificial intelligence systems to support and improve advanced manufacturing processes, such as manufacturing automobiles and spacecraft.

2. What is agentic computing?
It is a technology that enables artificial intelligence software (agents) to independently execute complex computer tasks across various applications based on user commands.

3. Why did the project acquire General Agents?
