Introduction
Google continues to introduce innovative tools to simplify technology use, most recently updating the NotebookLM platform, which blends artificial intelligence and search to deliver a more seamless experience for discovering online content and sources.
What is NotebookLM?
NotebookLM is known as an application developed by the Google Labs team that allows users to upload documents, links, or texts, which it then analyzes using artificial intelligence to generate summaries or Q&As. It is characterized by its ability to create summaries or questions related to the uploaded content.
Discover Sources feature
In the latest version, users can simply click the “Discover” button, then describe the topic they are looking for. NotebookLM reviews hundreds of potential sites in seconds and offers 10 suggested sources that can be viewed or added to the research project. This reduces the effort users spend browsing traditional search engines.
Helpful NotebookLM features
Alongside “Discover Sources,” the app includes several tools such as building FAQs, providing concise summaries, and the “Audio Overviews” feature, which generates a virtual audio conversation about the topic. Although this latter feature has met with some fascination and strange reactions, it stands out as one of the app’s most prominent capabilities.
The shift toward proactive search
Google is attempting to simplify the steps required to search for information, as NotebookLM allows for self-directed learning. This update highlights the trend toward tools that offer “foresight” into suitable topics, rather than having users search themselves and sift through hundreds of results.
NotebookLM usage limits
The app is still in its experimental stages, and a free version is available with certain limits on the number of “Audio Overviews” and other features. You can upgrade your subscription to a paid plan for $20 per month to expand your ability to use the app further.
