Between privacy preservation and delivering more advanced features, Google Maps continues its success in its twentieth year with new surprises.

Google Maps is one of the most widespread and used digital services in the world, relied upon by millions to navigate and explore places and businesses. As it reaches its twentieth year, Google is celebrating with a major update that includes adding three new countries to its coverage scope, as well as integrating enhanced artificial intelligence capabilities in data analysis and terrain recognition. This development comes as part of Google’s ongoing effort to outpace competitors and attract more users and business services looking to benefit from accurate and comprehensive information.

Privacy and Security Measures
Privacy is considered one of the most prominent challenges facing mapping platforms due to the sensitivity of location data collected and stored. In the case of Google Maps, the company blurs faces and license plates in images it collects from Street View, reducing the risks of identification and misuse of information. Google also allows users the option to request the blurring of any area in street imagery if they feel it might put them at risk, such as homes or sensitive workplaces.

On the other hand, features are available to disable location history or delete visited places, including sensitive centers such as abortion clinics and domestic violence centers. In an additional move to enhance privacy, Google shifted location history to devices in December instead of storing it on cloud servers, making it harder for authorities to directly access user data.

Business Model and Revenue Sources
Despite the widespread popularity of Google Maps, details of the company’s spending and revenues remain undisclosed in detail, as this service is listed among other packages in the financial reports of Alphabet, Google’s parent company. However, a Morgan Stanley report in 2019 provided estimates indicating that Google Maps revenues could rise from nearly $3 billion to $11 billion over four years. These revenues rely on an advertising model that allows advertisers to promote their businesses on the mapping platform, especially when users search for specific places like restaurants and hotels.

Google’s income is not limited to advertising; it also provides an API for businesses that need detailed information about buildings, roads, and geographical data. Prominent examples include solar panel companies that need rooftop and elevation data to calculate energy efficiency, in addition to delivery and taxi service companies, such as Domino’s, which relied on Google Maps to ensure delivery accuracy. Uber previously indicated that it paid tens of millions of dollars to use Google Maps technologies over a three-year period.

Artificial Intelligence and Autonomous Vehicle Services
The integration of artificial intelligence into Google Maps is a crucial step, especially given the rising interest in autonomous vehicles and electric cars. Google announced improvements to location-determination algorithms, allowing higher accuracy in complex urban areas. It is also developing routing features that help drivers choose the most appropriate routes to save fuel or electric charging, indicating Google’s orientation toward supporting sustainability and reducing carbon emissions.

In this context, autonomous vehicles play an essential role in the future of maps, as they rely on accurate and constantly updated road information. Recent years have seen the rise of specialized companies in this field, such as Waymo, owned by Alphabet, which succeeded in operating autonomous taxi fleets in some American cities. The upcoming ambitions lie in the possibility of integrating data collected by smart vehicles directly into Google Maps, enabling immediate and accurate updates for every user.

The Future of Google Maps
It appears that the capabilities of Google Maps will go beyond merely guiding users to destinations. The expansion in using artificial intelligence and augmented reality technologies could enable new services, such as guiding users inside large buildings, providing real-time information on congestion in stores or restaurants, and even predicting the ideal time for a specific trip. These updates make Google Maps a leading platform not only in navigation but in providing vital information to users about their surroundings.

As the service celebrates its twentieth year and adds three countries, it is clear that Google seeks to maintain the momentum of innovation and expand its reach in an increasingly competitive world. Despite privacy and security challenges, Google’s strategy of minimizing risks and reassuring users may be the key to maintaining public trust.
