Google has announced 12 winning projects funded by the AI for Science Fund. The projects aim to solve global challenges in health, agriculture, and the environment by using artificial intelligence to accelerate scientific discoveries.

Google has announced the 12 recipients of the $20 million “AI for Science” fund. The initiative aims to support organizations using artificial intelligence to tackle the world’s most complex scientific challenges, from decoding genomes to protecting biodiversity.

Article contents:

Accelerating scientific discovery

Humanity faces increasingly complex challenges, while the pace of traditional discoveries slows down. This fund comes to provide researchers with the tools and resources needed to use artificial intelligence to unlock the impossible and achieve breakthroughs that used to take decades within just a few years.

Health and life sciences

Five of the winners focus on health. For example, the University of Washington is using AI to map mysterious parts of the human genome to understand rare diseases. Meanwhile, other researchers are developing tools to predict parasite evolution and bacterial drug resistance, promising a shift in preventive medicine.

Global food systems

In agriculture, winning organizations are using AI to develop more disease-resistant crops and understand the “dark matter” in food—thousands of unknown molecules affecting nutrition. The Innovative Genomics Institute is also working to reduce methane emissions from livestock by modifying the microbiome.

Environmental and planetary protection

To protect biodiversity, Rockefeller University is accelerating the production of genetic blueprints for 1.8 million species. In energy, the Swiss Plasma Center is unifying nuclear fusion data to accelerate access to clean, carbon-free energy.

Commitment to open science

All winning projects share a commitment to open science principles, where results, data, and solutions will be made available to the global scientific community, multiplying the benefit and accelerating innovation beyond the boundaries of individual projects.
