In a deal that would deepen ties between France and the UAE in the AI race, Mistral, Europe’s largest startup, is in talks for massive funding to boost its computing power and rival US tech giants.

Introduction: A major boost for the European champion

French artificial intelligence startup Mistral is in talks to raise up to $1 billion in equity from several investors, including Abu Dhabi’s MGX fund, according to people familiar with the matter. In addition to equity funding, Mistral is discussing hundreds of millions of euros in debt from French lenders. Such a deal would significantly strengthen Mistral’s position as Europe’s largest AI startup and provide it with the resources needed to compete with American giants like OpenAI.

Deepening Franco-Emirati ties

The deal would deepen ties between France and the United Arab Emirates in a field increasingly dominated by the United States and China. Mistral remains central to French President Emmanuel Macron’s drive for AI sovereignty. Mistral, MGX, and Nvidia Corp have collaborated to build Europe’s largest AI data center campus, while UAE ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed has committed to spending €50 billion on AI projects in the country.

MGX is a prolific AI investor that has backed OpenAI and xAI. It is also a partner in OpenAI’s Stargate project and another massive data center fund involving Nvidia and Microsoft Corp.

Mistral’s expansion ambitions

Mistral has raised over €1 billion ($1.17 billion) since its founding in 2023, reaching a valuation of €5.8 billion following a round last year. However, it has not kept pace with American rivals like OpenAI and has shifted toward more customized enterprise services.

Arthur Mensch, CEO of Mistral, said earlier this year that his company would spend several billion euros on computing facilities, including a new factory near Paris equipped with the latest cutting-edge chips. In June, Nvidia announced plans to help develop an “AI cloud” service in France called Mistral Compute using 18,000 new Grace Blackwell chips. The debt Mistral is in talks to raise will provide the funds needed for the Mistral Compute project.

Global investor base

Mistral’s investor list includes Microsoft and US venture capital firms Lightspeed Venture Partners, General Catalyst, and Andreessen Horowitz. This broad investor base gives the company not only capital, but also expertise and access to global networks, enhancing its ability to compete on the international stage.

Conclusion: The funding and compute race

Mistral’s fundraising talks illustrate a fundamental reality in today’s AI race: access to massive capital and immense computing power are crucial for success. By securing this new funding, Mistral hopes to build the infrastructure it needs to train larger, more powerful models, expand its team, and cement its position as a viable European alternative to American dominance in AI. It is a bold move showing that Europe is serious about competing in this strategic field.
