In a world obsessed with efficiency and automation, there is a real danger that artificial intelligence will become a tool for producing safe and boring ideas. But what if we used it as an ally for boldness, to help us ask more dangerous questions and test braver ideas?

In a world obsessed with efficiency and automation, there is a real danger that artificial intelligence will become a tool for producing safe and boring ideas. But what if we used it as an ally for boldness, to help us ask more dangerous questions and test braver ideas?

Introduction: The paradox of boldness in the age of safety

Boldness. That is what wins attention, applause, and awards. The work that stands out on the global stage is the work that does not play it safe. Boldness does not just win; it works. The 2025 State of Creativity report from LIONS revealed that creatively courageous brands achieve profit margins up to four times higher. Yet, according to the same report, only 13 percent of companies are “creative risk-friendly.”

The rest play it safe. And that is dangerous. Safe ideas are not just ignored, overlooked, and forgotten; they now actively harm brands, with one in four consumers unlikely to buy from brands that subject them to generic marketing. In our new AI-powered world, the industry is caught in a frenzy around optimization, personalization, efficiency, speed, productivity, and automation. All of these are useful, but they are also dangerously safe. Because in marketing, nothing is more dangerous than a safe idea—especially one scaled infinitely by powerful AI tools.

Artificial intelligence: A tool for boldness or efficiency?

What if AI is not just here to make us faster, but to make us bolder? To ask bolder questions, test bolder ideas, make bolder choices, and have the courage to defend dangerous thinking? Rather than just being an engine for efficiency, AI can be our most powerful ally in the pursuit of true creativity. So how can we use AI to help us become bolder marketers?

1. Ask bolder questions

Large Language Models (LLMs) are safe spaces to ask dangerous questions and find answers that challenge conventional thinking. Try giving your favorite language model links to your company’s last 10 publicly available annual reports and ask it: “What should our CEO be afraid of?” You are guaranteed to discover at least one brave new idea. (Note: You should never feed confidential information into a public LLM… that is a bit too bold).

2. See boldness to be bold

Sometimes you need to see courage to be courageous. So, try asking AI to curate the boldest work from anywhere in the world. Want to see bold work in telecommunications? Healthcare? Financial services? It is all there, on demand. And it is contagious. Make this a feature in every brief and every creative review, and watch the level of creative boldness soar to new heights.

3. Try more and fear less

Boldness used to be expensive, but when the cost of trying drops, the appetite for trying grows. Generative AI and creative platforms are playgrounds where a brand can quickly and affordably explore dozens of creative directions, identities, and executions. Break the rules, without going bankrupt, to see where bold thinking might take you.

4. Test ideas in a safe zone

The bolder the idea, the more nerve-wracking it is. However, advanced data-driven AI tools now provide a sandbox for boldness, enabling brands to test work in simulated environments against artificial audiences to gauge how ideas are received without risking real-world backlash. This takes a little extra effort, but if having a thousand focus groups on demand 24/7 helps your brand make courageous decisions that increase profit margins, it is probably worth the effort.

Conclusion: Remember to remember

AI and creativity represent a powerful paradigm shift for scaling. However, the real opportunity lies in using AI not to replace the human touch, but to enhance and protect it. To carve out space for ideas that are boldly beautiful, courageously designed, and deeply felt. Because at the end of the day, the bravest thing a marketer can do is not move faster, but make something worth remembering.
