A comprehensive review of smart glasses and everyday usage challenges

Despite rapid and impressive developments in the design and development of smart glasses, users are still eagerly searching and questioning the true purpose and function that justifies wearing a connected device equipped with a camera on their faces all day long.

Introduction

This new and widespread collection of smart glasses available on the market is certainly the most stylish, most affordable, and most comfortable and technically capable ever compared to all previous generations and versions. Despite all these wonderful technological achievements, their permanent use still does not make complete sense for the average consumer. Right now, I regularly wear a pair of advanced smart glasses called Even Realities G1 to test their practical features. There are another two advanced pairs from Rokid sitting quietly on my office desk for comprehensive evaluation and testing. Just a few feet away, I have the advanced Meta Ray-Ban display charging alongside the revolutionary neural wristband device. In my crowded closet, I own six additional pairs of budget smart sunglasses priced at $50, which were sent to me by a very enthusiastic sales rep from a Walmart store. This budget collection sits next to glasses from well-known companies like Xreal, RayNeo, and Lucyd, as well as an old, used pair of Razer Anzu. Later this week, I will call my optometrist because I am deeply hoping to test and examine a new pair of Ray-Ban Meta optical glasses, which theoretically and according to the manufacturer are supposed to be able to professionally handle my difficult and complex vision prescription. In short, I am literally drowning in a flood of advanced smart glasses, and more and more amazing models are looming strongly on the near tech horizon, all laden with massive revolutionary promises.

Exaggerated promises and alarming privacy security threats

Right now, and specifically at this stage, it is very difficult and highly confusing to distinguish between these various scattered and widespread devices. Not only do they resemble each other in sleek exterior appearance, but most of them are imprecise and unclear in their deliberate attempts to force and paste complex artificial intelligence technology directly onto your face day and night. They come loaded and burdened with huge and fanciful promises about how wearable and portable AI can completely change the course of your daily life: it promises to make you a healthier and more vibrant person by meticulously tracking and analyzing everything you eat and consume, it promises to make you smarter and quicker-witted by accurately capturing and documenting notes on every single word you utter during your day, and it makes you a more creative and innovative person by turning your simple ordinary surroundings into wonderful music playlists and amazing ideas for romantic dates and meetings.

However, after a full year packed with intensive personal experiments and precise, continuous testing, I have not yet witnessed any stunning innovation that actually lives up to meeting those massive, fanciful, and flashy tech promises. If the smart glasses category and its manufacturers are to truly succeed and prove their high relevance and importance to consumers, they urgently need to tell a better and much more convincing story to justify why these sophisticated devices must and should remain firmly fixed on your face throughout the hours of the day. Regardless of the model or brand I wear in the early morning, modern smart glasses always make me feel like the famous secret agent James Bond. I can simply walk around the residential neighborhood wearing a chunky, modern pair of classic Ray-Ban glasses, listen clearly and enjoyably to my favorite audiobook, and read my incoming text messages in complete silence without ever needing to pull my mobile phone from my pocket. And if I feel a sudden urge for hot coffee, I can easily speak and enter the name of a preferred local café and instantly get precise guidance and directions right in front of me. Anyone looking at me on the street will never realize or suspect what I am doing silently and covertly.

Community sensitivity and conflicting hidden tech intentions

This wonderful and unique feeling applies doubly and assuredly when the tech glasses are equipped with powerful built-in cameras or accessories that effectively support complex gesture-based controls, as is the case with the Even Realities G1 devices and the advanced Meta Ray-Ban display. The idea of covert and silent control over an invisible display that no one else can see? That is truly wonderful and amazing in reality. Or perhaps capturing my pet cat’s movements and actions and recording them without him ever realizing it? Well, famous broadcaster David Attenborough needs to step aside now, because thanks to this technology, I have become the new wildlife documentary director in my home.

However, contrastingly and paradoxically, I have never felt more like an irresponsible and bad citizen than the moment I unintentionally and spontaneously recorded a video of a street flower vendor during my field testing of the advanced Meta Ray-Ban display. Modern smart glasses classified as “good” fundamentally rely on their high and ideal ability to remain hidden and inconspicuous. They are truly considered good and acceptable if no one notices their presence or nature. This is what makes them stylish, versatile, and flexible for everyday wear. Devices are considered particularly good if you own an upscale, expensive model that never requires you to speak out loud or utter explicit voice commands to the AI. Thus, they are less prominent and obvious, yet you still get and benefit from all the powerful tech features. The standout Even Realities G1 glasses can be controlled simply by tapping and swiping lightly on the side of an accompanying stealthy smart ring. Despite these stealth capabilities, there is a logical and sound reason why spies and operatives work covertly and secretly. The possibility of recognition and exposure constitutes a real and ongoing threat and concern when you wear one of these advanced camera-equipped devices, whether for you as a user or for the people around you who are unaware of what you are doing. In sensitive public places, such as shared restrooms or crowded waiting rooms, I now feel constant anxiety and severe tension about making others around me uncomfortable. I am not an intrusive and annoying person by nature, but strangers do not know this fact about me. And the more people get angry and sensitive about these blatant violations of tech privacy, the more I feel a continuous sense of internal tension and professional deception while wearing them. I also constantly wonder when famous actress Patti LuPone will stop in the middle of one of her major performances to scold me if the red indicator light flashes in the dark.

Shortcomings and limitations of embedded AI technologies

As for the most frustrating and negative aspect, it relates to built-in features and artificial intelligence technologies. No matter how much big tech companies want these glasses to be mere portable AI devices, the current AI in these devices remains limited and is actually quite “bad” for most people and everyday uses. Meta’s smart assistant is not wonderful or reliable, and competing glasses that come with proprietary and exclusive private models relying entirely on ChatGPT technology are not much better than their competitor. These superficial AI integrations are fine and acceptable perhaps for very simple and basic tasks like controlling music playback or quick inquiries about daily weather. But more complex and technical features are mostly massive, crude drains on battery life, or they are too obvious and simple to the point of making them impractical and ineffective in the context of a fast-paced, busy daily life.

For example, my husband, who relies entirely and uses his Meta glasses exclusively to try to identify old and obscure car makes and models at shows, occasionally drags me along to local car shows. On one occasion, I had to listen and watch in annoyance as Meta’s AI failed six consecutive times in its attempt to correctly identify an obvious Ferrari! At the famous Vatican Museum, the AI successfully and accurately identified the historical “Belvedere Torso” statue, but the unfortunately lacking strong Wi-Fi signal in the venue rendered the AI useless, very slow, and pointless for the rest of the day. Rokid’s AI assistant also regularly and annoyingly tells me that I have not set up the required and appropriate permissions for some important features, or that my Bluetooth connection is weak and intermittent. Even the new, innovative Conversit feature, which uses AI to define complex phrases during conversation, sprayed and flooded my field of vision with very obvious and boring definitions and explanations of “artificial intelligence” instead of providing actual, useful information.

Medical hurdle challenges and the self-repair dilemma

It is abundantly clear that rushing tech companies are inventing these theoretical scenarios and use cases because they simply desperately want and strongly need these devices to succeed and sell well in the market. The better this technology improves and evolves, the pressing question I ask myself is: why do you insist so strongly that I must put this heavy, unsettling device on my face all the time? Sometimes I clearly feel that tech companies have completely forgotten and ignored the simple truth that, first and foremost, most people wear glasses with the primary goal of improving vision and sight. Just in the past few weeks, Meta came out with an advanced version of its glasses that finally supports all general prescriptions. And among all the multiple brands I tested myself, Even Realities was the only one that said with full confidence, “Yes, we can completely handle your complex prescription without any problem.” But this exception is extremely rare.

Most of these currently advanced tech devices never support or meet my vision needs as a person suffering from poor eyesight, which means every morning I have to make a difficult and frustrating choice: do I wear annoying contact lenses with fun smart glasses, or do I wear my comfortable, traditional, “dumb” prescription glasses that lack technology? Furthermore and also alarmingly, what happens to smart glasses if your glasses break by accident? In the past, with regular prescription glasses, a simple screwdriver or pliers and heat could do the trick to solve the problem quickly and easily. But these kinds of easy, straightforward manual repairs and frame adjustments performed by the user alone are simply entirely impossible and fraught with risk with smart glasses, where all the sensitive, complex tech, delicate wires, and batteries live inside the fragile frames themselves. These medical challenges and limited repairability, combined with privacy intrusions and incomplete features, make me strongly wish that the “smart” features were easily removable and attachable only when needed, rather than remaining forced as an integrated, fixed device operating 24/7.

Answer: The real problem and dilemma is that many current manufacturers do not provide full and comprehensive support for complex and diverse prescriptions, forcing users suffering from poor vision to wear additional, annoying contact lenses, or completely abandon the use of smart devices in favor of their normal, vision-comfortable glasses.

Question: How do advanced smart glasses handle the challenges and problems of simple self-repair in the event of minor malfunctions or breaks?

Answer: Thanks to embedding complex and sensitive technical components, such as cameras, Bluetooth wires, and micro-batteries directly inside the frame structure, simple self-repair performed by the user, such as reattaching a screw or adjusting the shape of the glasses to fit the face, becomes nearly impossible and fraught with risk, leading to increased costs for replacing and repairing broken tech devices.
