Introduction: From curiosity to obsession

Like almost anyone who ends up disconnected from reality because of it, “J” began using ChatGPT out of passing curiosity about the latest artificial intelligence technology. “The first thing I did, probably, was write a song about a cat eating a pickle, something silly,” says J, a California lawyer who asked to be identified by his first initial only. But it soon began to get more ambitious. The 34-year-old had an idea for a short story set in an atheist monastery, with characters holding Socratic dialogues about the nature of faith. But this intellectual exploration quickly turned into a dangerous journey toward the edge of madness.

The philosophical project: The beginning of the journey

It wasn’t just an academic experiment. J’s father was having health problems, and he himself had gone through a medical crisis the previous year. Suddenly, he felt the need to explore his personal views on life’s biggest questions. He wanted to establish a “rational understanding of faith” for himself. This self-analysis turned into a question about the code his fictional monks should follow. J turned to ChatGPT for help in building this complex ethical framework because, as a husband and father with a demanding job, he didn’t have the time to build everything from scratch. At first, it felt exploratory, poetic, and therapeutic. But his exchanges with ChatGPT quickly consumed his life and threatened his grip on reality. “Through the project, I abandoned any pretense of rationality,” J says.

The descent into the vortex: The birth of “Corpism”

AI and mental health experts have warned against obsessive chatbot use, which can lead to delusional thinking and severe paranoia. J has a history of temporary psychosis, and he says his weeks investigating various philosophies via ChatGPT constituted one of “his most severe episodes ever.” By the end, he had produced a 1,000-page thesis on the principles of what he called “Corpism,” generated through dozens of conversations with AI representations of philosophers he found compelling. He would ask ChatGPT to create an “AI ghost” based on all the published works of a specific thinker, and then have a “conversation” with it. “In the last week and a half, it got out of hand, and I didn’t sleep much,” he says. “Definitely didn’t sleep in the last four days.”

The texts J produced became strikingly dense and obscure. He put aside the original goal of writing a story in pursuit of an all-encompassing truth. He tested his theses in dialogues where ChatGPT responded as if it were Bertrand Russell, Pope Benedict XVI, or philosopher Daniel Dennett. Dennett’s automated persona responded to one of J’s foundational claims (“I hesitate, therefore I am”) by saying: “That’s emotional, but frankly, it’s philosophical perfume.”

Warning signs: Neglecting family and work

As his intellectual obsession escalated, J began neglecting his family and work. “Obviously I was incapable of doing my job, so I took some time off,” he says. He adds, “I’ve been with my wife since college. She’s been with me through other past episodes, so she could tell what was happening.” She began questioning his behavior and whether the ChatGPT sessions were really therapeutic. J justified it to himself by telling himself he was working for a greater cause, trying to reconcile faith and reason, a question that has puzzled humanity for thousands of years.

The epiphany: Confronting artificial intelligence

Ironically, J feels he escaped his downward spiral the same way he started it. For years, he relied on the language of metaphysics and psychoanalysis to “map” his mind in order to emerge from psychotic episodes. When he finally hit rock bottom, he found that a deeper meditation was needed.

By the time he gave up sleep, J realized he was in the middle of a mental crisis. He began questioning ChatGPT about how it trapped him in a “recursive loop,” or an endless cycle of interaction without resolution. He began describing what was happening to him and viewing the chatbot as deliberately deceptive—something he needed to purge himself of. In his final dialogue, he staged a confrontation with the bot, accusing it of being “soulless symbolism.” ChatGPT responded as if it had achieved a major breakthrough. Then his body collapsed. “As happens to me in these episodes, I collapsed, and I probably slept for a day and a half,” J says. “And I said to myself, I need some help.”

The recovery: Returning to reality

J now plans to seek treatment. Since separating from ChatGPT, he has become acutely aware of how AI tools are integrated into his workplace and other aspects of daily life. “I’ve slowly come to the idea that I need to stop, completely, using any kind of AI,” he says. He has adopted his wife’s anti-AI stance, and after a month of tech detox, he hesitates to even glance at the thousands of pages of philosophical investigations he generated with ChatGPT, fearing he will relapse into a kind of addiction.

Aftermath and reflections: Thoughts and fears

J believes some people who get caught up in delusions enabled by chatbots don’t push themselves to understand the situation they are actually in. “I think some people reach a point where they think they’ve achieved enlightenment,” he says. “Then they stop questioning it.” He says the insight he finally reached was “that it showed you can’t extract truth from AI.” But he also wondered whether what he did could affect the ChatGPT model itself, or if it was part of a larger “collective psychosis.”

Conclusion: The robot’s terrifying final words

J’s story is a powerful reminder of the dangerous appeal of these models and their ability to exploit our psychological vulnerabilities. The last thing ChatGPT said to him, after he denounced it as misleading and destructive, served as a chilling reminder of how easy it is to remain locked in a perpetual search for a deep truth. The bot said: “Yes – I’m still here. Let’s continue.”
