Linking iCloud services with ChatGPT officially enabled
On Tuesday, October 27, OpenAI began enabling ChatGPT platform users to connect their iCloud Mail and iCloud Calendar accounts. Thanks to this move, the chatbot can now search within Apple account inboxes, draft and send emails, and schedule or modify calendar events. Until this announcement, mail and calendar integrations in ChatGPT covered services like Gmail and Google Calendar without iCloud support. The new plugins put iCloud services on equal footing and open Apple services to OpenAI’s Dots agents. The company wrote in a post on the official ChatGPT account: “A feature you’ve long requested, now in your hands to connect,” adding that users can ask the bot to “find that message, catch up on what you missed in your inbox, check the next appointment, or update a calendar event.”
How the mail and calendar plugins work and privacy terms
The calendar plugin can read, create, and update events so those changes appear directly in the Calendar app on the iPhone and any other app using iCloud Calendar. Meanwhile, the mail plugin can search and read messages, manage drafts, send emails, and search iCloud contacts. OpenAI’s help documentation indicates that each plugin includes a read-only contact search feature, while this launch does not include standalone contacts or reminders plugins. ChatGPT can only see messages sent to Apple addresses ending in icloud.com, me.com, or mac.com domains, and cannot see Gmail or Outlook accounts added by the user to the iOS Mail app. Both plugins require an app-specific password from the Apple account, and for the calendar, users log in using their primary Apple account email even if it differs from their iCloud email address.
Availability across all plans and integration with smart Dots agents
According to release notes from OpenAI, the new plugins are available in all ChatGPT plans across the web, desktop app, and iOS. Engadget reported that integration with Dots agents is tied to the paid Pro plan, while 9to5Mac confirmed that the two plugins work with Dots agents for the first time, and a Dots agent can even help set them up. OpenAI launched always-on Dots agents in late September as a competitor to Meta’s Muse agent.
A complex relationship combining software partnership and legal dispute
This launch coincided with Apple’s announcement on the same day of iMac and MacBook Pro devices with the M6 processor, and Creator Studio updates that add a chatbot partially powered by OpenAI models to Pages, Numbers, and Keynote apps. At the same time, the two companies are locked in a legal battle; Apple filed a lawsuit against OpenAI in July accusing its employees of stealing trade secrets, and on October 14 OpenAI said in a court filing that a former employee shared secret hardware plans with Apple. AppleInsider suggested that ChatGPT will remain behind AI-powered Siri in iOS 27, while Engadget summarized the relationship by stating: “Neither company appears willing or able to completely walk away from the other.”
