In a strategic partnership aimed at shaping the future of mobility, Baidu’s Apollo Go platform has announced its collaboration with Uber to deploy thousands of autonomous vehicles across multiple global markets, starting with select cities in Asia and the Middle East by the end of this year.

Introduction: An alliance of giants in the mobility world

On July 15, Apollo Go—Baidu’s autonomous ride-hailing platform—announced a strategic partnership with Uber to deploy its self-driving vehicles across various global markets. The collaboration aims to roll out thousands of autonomous vehicles under the Apollo Go brand, delivering safe and reliable driverless mobility services to a broader user base worldwide. This partnership combines Baidu’s leadership in autonomous driving technology with Uber’s massive global reach, paving the way for the widespread adoption of this revolutionary technology.

Global rollout plan

Under the agreement, the two companies plan to launch Apollo Go sixth-generation autonomous vehicles in select cities across Asia and the Middle East by the end of this year. Following this, the service will be expanded to include additional international markets. Once operations commence, Uber users will be able to request rides in Apollo Go autonomous vehicles directly through the Uber app, seamlessly integrating self-driving technology into the daily transportation experience of millions of users.

A shared vision for the future of mobility

Robin Li, founder of Baidu, said: “Our mission is to make self-driving cars accessible to more users in more markets. The partnership with Uber marks a milestone in the global expansion of Apollo Go. Together, we aim to offer passengers worldwide a safer and more efficient way to travel.”

Dara Khosrowshahi, CEO of Uber, echoed these sentiments, stating: “This partnership brings together two of the world’s most innovative technology companies to shape the future of mobility. As the world’s largest mobility platform—spanning rides, delivery, and freight—Uber is uniquely positioned to scale Apollo Go’s autonomous driving technology across global markets.”

Apollo Go’s expertise and global expansion

This partnership comes at a time when Apollo Go already possesses extensive operational experience. The platform has already deployed more than 1,000 autonomous vehicles across 15 cities worldwide, including Hong Kong, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi. The platform has completed over 11 million trips and accumulated more than 170 million kilometers of safe autonomous driving, highlighting its technological maturity and global readiness.

This extensive operational expertise will be crucial to the success of the partnership with Uber. Operating a fleet of autonomous vehicles is not just about technology; it also requires complex logistics management, vehicle maintenance, and navigating regulatory and societal challenges in each new market.

Conclusion: A step toward widespread adoption

The partnership between Baidu and Uber marks a pivotal moment in the autonomous vehicle industry. For years, self-driving technology was largely considered experimental and confined to small geographic areas. By integrating the Apollo Go fleet into Uber’s global platform, the two companies are taking a giant step toward making autonomous transport a real and accessible option for the general public.

If this collaboration succeeds, it could significantly accelerate the pace of autonomous vehicle adoption worldwide, potentially leading to major improvements in road safety, reduced congestion, and new, convenient mobility options for millions.
