Artificial intelligence is now an integral part of many fields and has recently begun reshaping the world of sports, particularly in cycling. UAE Team Emirates is leading this revolution by using an advanced technology known as “Anna,” which could fundamentally transform data analysis and athletic performance optimization.

Artificial intelligence is reshaping sports

Jeroen Swart, performance coordinator at UAE Team Emirates, announced that the team has been working for years to develop a custom data platform in partnership with Emirati institutions. The new technology offers unprecedented capabilities for analyzing data and using it to improve performance. Swart states: “AI is now capable of providing unique insights, and the biggest challenge is defining the right questions we need to answer.”

Data analysis: An untapped wealth

UAE Team Emirates possesses a massive amount of data encompassing everything from heart rates and sleep metrics to climate details and tire pressure. However, the challenges lie in integrating and analyzing this data within a single context. Dan Lorang, head of performance at Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe, explained that the ability to gather and analyze this information can radically change planning and strategies in sports.

Precision training: A new revolution

AI-driven training has become a new concept known as “precision training.” This approach relies on analyzing athletes’ individual responses to various workouts. Stephen Barrett, coach for Decathlon-AG2R La Mondiale, emphasizes that coaches need to reduce time wasted on trial-and-error methods, and artificial intelligence can be the solution.

Virtual reality in cycling

UAE Team Emirates is working with the Emirati AI technology firm “Analog” to develop unique analytical tools based on virtual reality. Using these technologies, athletes can review races and view events in a three-dimensional manner, giving them a clearer perspective on strategies that can be improved.

The future of sports and artificial intelligence

As professional sports teams increasingly rely on artificial intelligence, investing in this technology has become a necessity rather than a luxury. Swart believes that teams failing to invest in AI will fall behind in competition. He added: “AI may not provide quick fixes for every problem, but it represents a future that cannot be ignored.”
