Apple Intelligence arrived last month, and the company promises us some exciting features that will appear with the iOS 18.2 update in the coming weeks. In contrast, new reports indicate that some of Apple’s biggest competitors in the field of artificial intelligence are beginning to face growth challenges. It seems Apple has found the ideal moment to make breakthroughs in this space.
The traditional narrative is beginning to change
Apple has long been associated with delayed releases compared to other tech companies that launch new technologies quickly, reinforcing the narrative that Apple is “late” in this field. With artificial intelligence, there may have been some truth to this claim previously, but things are starting to change. Last month, Apple rolled out major artificial intelligence features to hundreds of millions of devices with the iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1 updates.
Now, the next wave of Apple Intelligence technologies is expected to arrive soon with the launch of iOS 18.2, which will include features like Genmoji, Image Playground, and integration with ChatGPT. Apple’s AI models may not be as advanced as some competitors, but they focus on what Apple does best: delivering consumer-friendly and beloved products rather than just advanced technologies.
Before the end of the year, there is no doubt that the AI features releasing in iOS 18.2 will become more famous and widespread than any other AI-based product on the market. This success comes at a time when competitors like OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic are facing a slowdown in their progress.
Slowdown in growth of Apple’s AI competitors
OpenAI was on the verge of a major breakthrough. It finished an initial training round for a massive artificial intelligence model known internally as Orion that was expected to surpass the performance of previous versions of ChatGPT, but the results fell short of expectations. Alphabet (Google) has also faced difficulties, as the upcoming version of the Gemini software failed to meet internal expectations. Meanwhile, Anthropic has delayed the release of its anticipated Claude 3.5 Opus model.
Despite the successes achieved by these companies, slowing growth while Apple reaches its AI boom is far from ideal for them. It may not be long before talk of Apple lagging in AI becomes a thing of the past.
