An anonymous artificial intelligence model has appeared on OpenRouter under the name Ox Alpha, achieving exceptional results in software engineering benchmarks and outperforming major global models amid technical indicators linking it to Chinese Zhipu labs.

The covert appearance of the Ox Alpha model ignites the race for autonomous coding excellence and raises developer questions about the origins of advanced models.

Unprecedented results astonish the developer community

An anonymous artificial intelligence model appeared on the popular developer platform OpenRouter on August 20, 2026, without indicating any developing company or owning entity. Featuring a massive context window of one million tokens and impressive standard benchmark results, it prompted developers and researchers to race in an attempt to uncover the identity of its creators. The model bears the programmatic identifier “stealth/ox-alpha” and was made available for free for a full week, quickly outperforming top leading models in highly complex software engineering tests.

Independent developer Ben Davis tested the Ox Alpha model across ten programming tasks derived from the SWE-bench standard, an advanced benchmark measuring AI’s ability to read real codebases, discover vulnerabilities and bugs, and generate successfully working patches. The unknown model achieved a staggering score of about 80%, significantly outperforming Claude 5 Fable, which recorded 65%, and GPT-5.6 Soul, which achieved 52%. Davis himself described these results as confounding and astonishing given the lack of official information regarding the model’s origin and source.

Despite these exceptional results, the tests are surrounded by some scientific caveats, as the tested sample size remains small, and the models were tested with a varying number of coding attempts. The public leaderboard for SWE-bench has not yet officially listed Ox Alpha, as official lists continue to show Claude Opus 5 leading at 73.6%, pending broader independent verification processes on larger test sets.

Extraordinary technical specifications and temporary free access

Data listed on the OpenRouter platform confirms the model’s advanced technical specifications, featuring a processing context of 1,048,576 tokens and multimodal support including text, image, and video processing, with an output capacity of up to 131,072 tokens per single response. The model was priced as free during the trial preview period. Additionally, OpenCode, a command-line-driven programming agent environment, began distributing the model via its free tier, announcing a capacity of up to 100 trillion tokens per day.

The service provider noted that prompt and output logs are temporarily retained without being used in model training processes, although OpenCode announced in a separate statement its commitment to retaining no data whatsoever—a contradiction noticed by developers that sparked wide discussions regarding privacy policies and the confidentiality of code data in commercial projects.

This exceptional context window size allows the model to process complete software projects, read long documentation files, and handle complex error logs in a single session, enhancing analysis accuracy and reducing code hallucinations when building multi-layered solutions and systems.

Technical evidence points to Zhipu labs

Code analysis and technical investigations conducted by the developer community point to China’s Zhipu AI labs, the developer of the GLM model family also known as Z.AI. Tokenizer digital footprint analysis across 25 different code texts showed that token counts in the Ox Alpha model match almost perfectly with the GLM-5.3 model, alongside a fixed additional wrapper of 75 tokens. Video encoder behaviors and API response patterns also matched Zhipu’s proprietary architectural design.

This model is the fifth covert release associated with the Chinese labs to appear on OpenRouter in recent months, as previous secret releases, such as the “Pony Alpha” model, were later claimed by Zhipu after trial periods ended. Despite a minority hypothesis suggesting the model is linked to Xiaomi and its MiMo team, technical evidence favors Zhipu, while no official entity had claimed the model as of August 21.

The open-source community awaits the development team’s disclosure of official research papers and model weights after the preview period ends, at a time when Chinese labs are reinforcing their global leadership in automated software development and high-quality code generation.
