The recruitment of prominent AI research talent from DeepMind to Microsoft opens a new chapter in the artificial intelligence race, raising questions about how this will impact the future of interactive agents.

Major tech companies are engaged in a fierce competition to attract top artificial intelligence talent and experts, racing to build systems capable of providing new, practical applications across various fields—ranging from audio and podcasts to office and commercial uses. Recently, Microsoft announced the acquisition of a group of researchers who previously worked at Google’s DeepMind lab, in a move aimed at enhancing its capabilities in developing what is known as the “intelligent agent” or “interactive agent,” which can perform diverse tasks ranging from booking flight tickets to managing schedules. This step is part of an accelerating trend among tech giants such as Google, Apple, and others, as they attempt to dominate the future of AI and deploy it in innovative and profitable ways.

Attracting DeepMind talent
Reliable reports indicated that Mustafa Suleyman, a co-founder of DeepMind in 2010 and currently Microsoft’s Head of AI, has successfully persuaded a number of his former colleagues to join a new team in Zurich. Among these researchers are Marco Tagliasacchi and Zalán Borsos, who were part of the team responsible for developing the “Audio Overviews” feature in Google’s AI lab. This feature converts text into podcast-style audio clips, making content more engaging and seamless for the listener. Both also worked on the anticipated “Astra” project, an intelligent agent capable of handling real-time inquiries via video, audio, and text.

Additionally, Matthias Minderer, a researcher specializing in adding computer vision capabilities to AI models, has joined the new team. This move aims to expand Microsoft’s horizons in image analysis and visual content processing, a vital feature for creating more comprehensive and versatile applications.

Mustafa Suleyman’s role at Microsoft
Mustafa Suleyman left Google in 2022 and co-founded an AI startup named Inflection before officially joining Microsoft in March 2024. He brought along several members of his former team to support the mission of developing the next generation of Microsoft’s Copilot. Through this effort, Microsoft aims to create intelligent agents that can handle various tasks with high efficiency, such as arranging appointments in a user’s daily calendar, coordinating travel plans, and facilitating digital human communication. Suleyman described the new team’s work in Zurich as a fundamental pillar for Microsoft’s future in AI, alongside the company’s other offices in London and global cities.

Intensifying corporate competition
These moves are part of an intense rivalry among tech giants like Google, Apple, and Amazon, each striving to secure top AI talent. We have previously seen key researchers leave Google to join Microsoft or work at startups looking to establish their presence. Meanwhile, Google seeks to strengthen its footprint through projects like Astra, a voice-driven agent slated for release in 2025, while Amazon works on developing AI models that can be integrated into the Alexa voice assistant to make it smarter and more interactive.

The role of voice and human interaction
Voice is emerging as one of the most important new AI interfaces, allowing users to interact with technology in a seamless, natural way akin to everyday conversation. Statements from the new researchers joining Microsoft indicate that a focus on voice will lead to more interactive dimensions with users, improving experiences in education, customer service, and even entertainment. This goes hand-in-hand with developments in computer vision and text processing, enabling companies to build “multimodal” models capable of understanding images, video, audio, and text together within a single framework.

Looking to the future
AI experts agree that the coming phase will witness the emergence of “intelligent agents” capable of reading user context, understanding intents, and executing them independently or semi-independently. Microsoft, Google, Apple, and others are expected to play a leading role in achieving this leap, committing massive budgets and employing top-tier scientists and developers. As market competitiveness grows, it is difficult to predict who will claim the top spot, but what is certain is that the race will continue to attract talent and develop cutting-edge technologies.

This career shift highlights the critical importance of the human element in driving innovation, especially in a fast-changing field like artificial intelligence. Microsoft’s recruitment of AI talent from DeepMind is not just an ordinary hiring update, but reflects a strategic transformation through which tech giants seek to cement their positions in a world where intelligent capabilities form the core of competition and success. As Mustafa Suleyman and his team push the boundaries of what is possible in intelligent agent technology, the global race continues to harvest the fruits of this digital revolution, which many consider to be the focal point of future computing in the coming decades.
