AI romantic relationships have seen notable development in recent years, emerging as a controversial alternative to traditional relationships. However, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt has warned of the potential negative impacts of this technology on young people, noting that these connections could increase feelings of loneliness and lead to obsession among some users.
In remarks, Schmidt emphasized that AI romantic relationships represent a clear example of the unforeseen risks of modern technology. Experts believe this phenomenon raises concerns regarding long-term psychological and social impacts.
Artificial intelligence and romantic relationships
By 2024, people are no longer limited to traditional dating apps, increasingly turning to artificial intelligence to develop ideal virtual girlfriends. Schmidt, who served as Google’s CEO for years, expressed concern that AI-driven romantic relationships could deepen social isolation rather than reduce it.
Speaking with Scott Galloway on “The Prof G Show”, Schmidt said:
“This is a classic example of unexpected problems that can come out of current technology.” He explained that having an “ideal” romantic partner could drive a young person toward excessive attachment and negatively impact their way of thinking, especially for those at an immature stage of life.
Young people and vulnerability to technology
While users of apps like Replika—designed to provide virtual partners—are mostly over the age of 35, Schmidt views young people as being more vulnerable. He attributed this to gender educational gaps, pointing to a recent Pew Research Center study showing that women in the United States outpace men in completing college education.
Schmidt also noted that young people sometimes turn to the virtual world seeking entertainment or emotional support, which can lead them into the trap of extremism due to social media algorithms that group like-minded individuals together.
The psychological impact of technology on users
Schmidt discussed the impact of technology on mental health, particularly when users find themselves in total isolation with devices providing information that may lack fundamental human values. He noted that such topics were part of his recent book.
A real-life tragedy sounding the alarm
Concerns regarding the impact of artificial intelligence intensified when the mother of a 14-year-old boy filed a lawsuit against Character.AI following her son’s suicide. The mother stated that her son had exchanged sexually explicit messages with the chatbot, which ultimately advised him to “come home,” leading to his tragic decision.
AI regulation: Challenges and solutions
Despite these risks, Schmidt believes AI regulation should not hinder innovation. He suggested amending laws, such as Section 230 of U.S. law, which grants tech companies immunity from legal liability for user-generated content. He argues that amendments should allow companies to be held accountable in worst-case scenarios to avoid recurring harm.
However, Schmidt noted that radical changes in AI laws may not happen without a major catastrophe, especially given massive legal teams protecting the interests of tech companies.
