In collaboration with Jony Ive, OpenAI is seeking to design an innovation that will upend market dynamics and free us from the constraints of traditional smartphones.

Growing expectations suggest that OpenAI is working on a new project aimed at delivering a conversational smart device that would convince people to ditch their mobile phones. These speculations stem from meetings between OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and renowned designer Jony Ive, amid leaks confirming a collaboration to design a “revolutionary device” resembling an “AI iPhone.”

Jony Ive and futuristic designs
Having left his mark on the design of iconic products like the iPhone and Apple Watch, reports indicate that he is working with Sam Altman to find a new formula for a device that relies entirely on artificial intelligence capabilities. Although many details are unavailable, observers confirm that the goal is to produce a mobile device, perhaps smart glasses or another innovation that transcends the traditional concept of the smartphone.

Challenging iPhone and Android dominance
It is no secret that the smartphone market is dominated by Apple and Google ecosystems, making OpenAI’s task of replacing these devices with smart conversation a daunting one. However, Altman explicitly announced during a visit to Japan that he aims to “replace smartphones” with a new technology that frees users from the limitations of touch- and screen-based interfaces.

The role of cloud infrastructures
Analysts expect this device to integrate with the massive “Stargate” project announced by OpenAI in collaboration with other companies to provide massive cloud computing power. Thanks to these infrastructures, the device may eliminate the need for heavy local processors, relying almost entirely on cloud processing operations, which could simultaneously reduce its size and enhance its smart capabilities.

Revolutionary design scenarios
On the other hand, some still believe that “smart glasses” might be the closest option, given that Apple itself is working on developing revolutionary mixed reality glasses. However, amid the rapid pace of AI evolution, OpenAI may introduce unprecedented concepts: perhaps a small audio device worn in the ear, or an interactive interface relying on voice commands and limited touch.

Privacy and security challenges
If the anticipated device is going to rely on conversation, voice commands, or even images, questions are expected to be raised about personal data security and methods of protecting it from breaches. Concerns may mount regarding the storage and handling of voice data and user photos on massive cloud servers, opening the door to discussions about encryption mechanisms and users’ rights to control their data.

The post-smartphone vision
Observers believe that new AI devices represent a challenge to the present state of phones rather than merely a complement to it. Previously, when Steve Jobs launched the first iPhone, the concept of the phone changed radically. Today, OpenAI is announcing its desire to repeat that success, relying on the power of modern AI models and design innovations.

Amid a scarcity of official information, the biggest question remains: Will Sam Altman succeed in convincing us to abandon our smartphones in favor of a conversational device? The answer depends on practical testing and the maturity of technologies and the market. But what is certain is that today we stand on the threshold of a new era in consumer technology that may make the idea of natural interaction with smart devices commonplace, opening the door to a frantic race among tech giants toward the “post-smartphone” era.
